The article identifies the challenge but does not verify which accents appear in the embedded video, so the most useful way to approach it is to listen for how speakers handle the changing vowels and repeated middle-T sounds.
The video and the accent challenge
Scroll’s December 8, 2021 feature describes Mad Shadz presenting the tongue-twister challenge and embeds an Instagram post: Scroll’s feature. Its text does not name the accents or describe individual performances. Without verified details from the clip, it would be misleading to assign a particular pronunciation or accent to any speaker.
Instead, listen for the rhyme’s sound contrasts: how clearly each speaker separates “butter,” “bitter,” “batter,” and “better,” and how the middle consonant in words such as “butter” is pronounced. Those details offer a way to compare performances without treating one accent as the standard or ranking accents as better or worse.
The rhyme behind the challenge
A secondary reference attributes the rhyme to American writer Carolyn Wells, reporting that it first appeared in her 1899 collection The Jingle Book under the title “The Butter Betty Bought.” The same account says the character was called Betty Botta in the first printing. This is a reported publication history, not a claim based on a consulted scan of the original edition: the reference’s account of the rhyme’s origin.

Several versions and line breaks circulate. The following is one commonly circulated version, rather than a definitive text:

What to listen for
The changing vowels
The rhyme returns to the same B and T sounds while moving among “butter,” “bitter,” “batter,” and “better.” Their similar patterns make the vowel changes easy to blur, particularly when the lines are spoken quickly. The middle T
The T in the middle of “butter” or “better” can sound different across accents: it may be a flap, a crisp T, or a glottal stop. That variation is a general feature to listen for, not evidence about the specific speakers in the video.

Rhythm and clarity
Pay attention to whether a speaker keeps the words distinct as the repeated sounds gather momentum. Comparing vowel quality, middle-T pronunciation, rhythm, and clarity makes the challenge interesting without implying that any one accent is more correct.
