Vintage photos and archival footage from the first MTV Video Music Awards show the event at Radio City Music Hall on September 14, 1984. Getty Images has listings for Madonna at the ceremony and video footage of the venue exterior; period coverage and the Paley Center catalog help identify the people and moments in the images. An archive listing is a discovery lead, not permission to reproduce a photograph.
Where to find photos and footage from the first MTV VMAs
Getty Images’ 1984 MTV Video Music Awards listings include photographs of Madonna at Radio City Music Hall on September 14, 1984. Getty also has an event video listing described as showing the exterior of Radio City Music Hall during the awards. These are useful starting points for locating archival material, not evidence of a complete collection of images from the evening.
For additional context, a September 29, 1984 issue of Billboard has a caption describing co-hosts Bette Midler and Dan Aykroyd backstage with winners, and another identifying The Cars’ “You Might Think” as best video of 1984. The issue is available to consult through Google Books; its captions can help identify a period image or moment.
What the archival record establishes about the 1984 ceremony
The inaugural MTV Video Music Awards took place at Radio City Music Hall in New York on September 14, 1984. UPI reported the ceremony opening that day, and the Paley Center catalog lists the broadcast under “MTV Video Music Awards, The First Annual (TV),” dated September 14 at 10:00 PM. UPI’s contemporaneous report quotes New York Mayor Edward Koch saying, “MTV, let it rip!” as he opened the ceremony.

Bette Midler and Dan Aykroyd co-hosted, according to a contemporary Cash Box promotion. The Paley Center record lists Madonna and Darryl Hall among the program’s participants. The catalog entry is useful for checking the broadcast date and listed participants, though a catalog listing does not identify every person visible in every photograph.
For award context, UPI reported that Cyndi Lauper had nine nominations — UPI, 1984 — including best video of the year, and mentioned a viewers’ choice award. That contemporary report can help date or contextualize event coverage; it does not by itself identify the subjects in an uncaptioned image.

How to assess a photo before using it
When comparing archive results or a reproduced image in period coverage, check the item itself rather than relying on a broad search result. Record the subject and moment, whether the caption names the date and venue, and whether the item is an original contemporary photograph or a later reproduction. Provenance and caption details help distinguish a verified event image from material that is merely associated with the awards.
- Subject and moment: Does the listing or caption identify a performer, host, winner, backstage scene, or the venue?
- Date and location: Does the caption tie the image to September 14, 1984, and Radio City Music Hall?
- Provenance: Is it presented as a contemporary photograph, a later reproduction, or footage? Check the archive’s item-level description.
- Rights and permitted use: Confirm the terms for the specific item and your intended publication context before reproducing it.
Finding a photo is not the same as getting reuse rights
A search listing lets you discover an image; it does not establish that the image is free to publish. The available material does not settle the rights, price, or permitted uses of any particular item. Check the item’s licensing terms with the archive or rights holder before publication, and do not assume that a visible preview or a search result grants permission.
