Brooke Schofield accused singer Clinton Kane of misrepresenting his Australian accent and Perth upbringing in 2024. Kane and his representatives disputed that account. Earlier publicity described him as born in Perth, while his representative later said he was born in the Philippines and spent part of his childhood in Australia. The available reporting documents those conflicting accounts; it does not independently establish his full childhood history or provide a formal assessment of his accent.
What prompted the accusation?
In late June 2024, Schofield posted a multipart TikTok account about her past relationship with Kane. Among her allegations was that he had presented himself as Australian and raised in Perth in ways she believed did not match his background. The dispute drew wider attention after Kane posted a TikTok promoting a song with a caption that appeared to refer to Schofield, according to TIME’s July 2024 account.
A clip from a Zach Sang interview also became a focus. PerthNow described Kane rolling his “Rs” in what the outlet characterized as an apparent American accent, then seeming to overcorrect with “mate.” That is a reporter’s description of the clip, not a linguistic finding.
What did Kane and his representatives say?
The representative’s account
In a statement reported by Rolling Stone Australia, Kane’s representative said he was born in the Philippines, lived in Australia “for a time as a child,” and considers Australia home. The representative rejected the suggestion that Kane had been deceptive: “He has never been disingenuous about this.”

Kane’s explanation
In his response, as reported by TIME in July 2024, Kane said he moved frequently and used Australia as a concise answer because he had spent formative years there and did not want to recount every place he had lived. He put it this way: “I adopted just saying I was from Australia, because I didn’t want to list all 10 places that I’ve lived in and tell my life story every time I would make small talk with a stranger.” This is Kane’s explanation of his wording, not independent verification of his biography.
Why do older accounts say he was born in Perth?
Some earlier public descriptions differ from the 2024 account. A 2022 GRAMMY.com interview described Kane as having a slight Australian accent because of his Perth origins. PerthNow reported that a 2022 Frontier Touring biography called him “Born in Perth, Western Australia.” Those descriptions sit uneasily beside the representative’s statement that he was born in the Philippines.

The claims are not interchangeable: birthplace, childhood residence, formative years, and the place someone considers home are separate facts. The public accounts establish that earlier music publicity used the Perth-born description and that Kane’s side later gave a different birthplace account. The cited reporting does not independently resolve the discrepancy.
What can be concluded about the accent?
The coverage records Schofield’s allegation and the way a particular interview clip was characterized; it does not include a formal linguistic analysis or establish that Kane deliberately faked an accent. A person’s accent can reflect where they lived and other influences, but the available accounts do not provide enough evidence to determine how Kane acquired his speech patterns. The responsible conclusion is that the accusation remains contested, not proven by the reporting cited here.

How the separate family-death dispute fits in
Schofield’s videos also challenged statements Kane had made about family deaths. His representative said the person referred to as his mother was a mother-like figure from his teenage years, rather than his birth mother. In an August 2024 interview with TIME, Kane said he met the woman while traveling and struggled to explain the distinction publicly; he said his birth mother was alive. He described the woman as “someone I had a really wonderful, beautiful connection with, who was a mother figure to me from there on out.” This is a separate, disputed part of the wider story; it does not establish whether the accent or Perth-upbringing allegation is true.
