The ratings do not show that viewers pitied Stephen Colbert, and they do not prove that The Late Show got worse. What they show is a split picture. Total viewership slipped slightly in 2025, the audience under 50 fell much further, and then the show drew its largest audiences in years after CBS announced it would end. Understanding the gap requires separating the measurement windows, the audience groups, and the difference between an event audience and a normal month.
What CBS announced and why it matters for the ratings story
In July 2025, CBS announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would end in May 2026. CBS and Paramount executives said the decision was financial and unrelated to the show’s performance or content. In its report on the announcement, the Associated Press also noted that Colbert was winning his broadcast time slot at the time.
The executives’ statement, as AP quoted it, was: “It is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.” That is the company’s stated reason. Speculation about why the timing was chosen is a separate question, and the ratings data does not answer it.
The 2025 numbers: a small total-viewer dip and a larger drop among younger adults
Across calendar year 2025, Colbert averaged 2.545 million total viewers over 151 first-run episodes. That was down 1% from the prior year. The average for adults 18–49 was 229,000, down 19%. These are Nielsen Live+7 figures as compiled by LateNighter.

The two measures moved by very different amounts. A 1% change in total viewers is close to flat. A 19% change in the 18–49 group is a real decline in that demographic, and it is the figure most likely behind the impression that the show had softened. Readers should not treat the two as interchangeable.
The week after the announcement
The week of July 21, 2025 was the first full week of shows after the cancellation announcement. Nielsen Live+3 data, reported by LateNighter in its report on the week, showed an average of 3.059 million nightly viewers and a 12.63% total-viewer share. LateNighter described that share as the highest weekly share in the show’s run.

The 18–49 average for that week rose 64% from the week before. That is a short-window jump. It is a single week’s change, and nothing in the figures shows that it became a lasting trend.
The final months: a higher run-up to the finale
The show’s last stretch was stronger than its 2025 average. The table below sets out the periods covered by LateNighter’s reports and the measurement basis for each.

Two points keep these figures honest. First, the finale’s 9.123 million figure is a Live+3 number, which includes three days of delayed viewing, while the 6.74 million same-day figure is not. The 35% increase compares those two measures, so it overstates what the same-day audience did. Second, the finale was a one-time event. LateNighter described it as the most-watched regular weeknight episode of Colbert’s run, which is a claim about a special broadcast and not about the typical night. The 4.2 million May average also includes that event.
What the numbers cannot tell you
The cited Nielsen series measure linear television viewing. LateNighter’s 2025 report notes that its Nielsen ratings exclude audiences who watched late-night programming through streaming platforms or social media clips. A rise or fall in these figures therefore says nothing reliable about how many people watched Colbert’s clips online, or about interest in late-night comedy in general.

The ratings also cannot establish sympathy. AP reported that the theater audience booed and groaned when the cancellation was announced, and Colbert responded, “Yeah, I share your feelings.” Those are real reactions from one room on one evening. None of the sources cited here include a representative poll measuring whether viewers felt sorry for him. Nor do they include any objective measure of show quality. A higher audience during a farewell does not reveal why people tuned in: it could reflect goodbye viewing, curiosity about the ending, or loyalty, and the data cannot separate them.

- Period: Is it a full-year average, a single week, a quarter, or one special episode?
- Audience: Is it total viewers or adults 18–49? These can move in opposite directions or by very different amounts.
- Event status: Does the figure include a finale or other special broadcast that inflates an ordinary average?
- Measurement window: Is it Live+3, which adds three days of delayed viewing, or Live+7, or same-day? Comparing across windows is misleading.
Applied here, the record shows a modest annual softening in total viewers, a larger decline among younger adults, a strong reaction to the cancellation announcement, and a farewell period that drew the show’s biggest audiences. It does not show that the audience felt sorry for Colbert, and it does not show that the show declined in quality.
For the full context, the AP report on the cancellation is the primary source for the company’s stated reasoning, and LateNighter’s reports are the primary ratings sources cited above.
