On May 23, 2024, Payal Kapadia and the team behind All We Imagine As Light danced their way up the red carpet at the Festival de Cannes before the film’s competition screening. The clip is a short, celebratory moment from a day that ended with a long standing ovation. This article explains what the video shows, when and where it was recorded, what is confirmed about it, and what remains unknown.
What the video shows and when it happened
The moment took place on the red carpet at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, on the evening of May 23, 2024, before the film’s screening in the festival’s competition section. India Today reported on May 24, 2024 that Payal Kapadia and her team danced their way to the screening, and the festival itself published an official media item titled “ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT by Payal KAPADIA – Red Steps” on May 23, 2024, which places the moment on the same day.
The dance and the audience reaction are separate events. The dance happened on the carpet before the film began. The standing ovation came afterward, and India Today described it as lasting eight minutes. That figure is the outlet’s own account; it is not an independently timed measurement.

How to verify a red-carpet clip like this
- Check the date against a dated report. The India Today article is dated May 24, 2024, and describes the dance as happening on May 23.
- Look for an official festival listing. The Festival de Cannes media library entry dated May 23, 2024 confirms that the festival recorded the moment.
- Separate the moments. Confirm the dance and the post-screening ovation as different events before quoting either.
- Treat unnamed details with caution. Song titles, posting times, and individual performances are not confirmed by the sources reviewed, so avoid repeating them unless a primary source states them.
The video is best understood as a documented, celebratory arrival at Cannes on May 23, 2024. The dated festival listing and the contemporaneous report support that much; the finer details of the clip are not established by the available sources.
