Vhagar is bigger than Vermithor in House of the Dragon. The showrunner has described Vhagar as the largest living dragon in the series, and TIME calls Vermithor second to her in size. The show’s coverage establishes a ranking, not exact dimensions or a measurable size gap.
How do Vermithor and Vhagar compare in size?
Vhagar ranks first; Vermithor is described as the next largest. TIME calls Vermithor gigantic and “second only to Vhagar in size” in its Season 2 preview. Separately, Fast Company’s reporting on the show’s dragon design says showrunner Ryan Condal identifies Vhagar as the largest and oldest living dragon in the series.
That makes the answer clear for the television portrayal: Vhagar is larger, while Vermithor remains an enormous dragon in his own right.
Does the show give their exact sizes?
The cited coverage does not provide a reliable shared measurement for either dragon: no established length, wingspan, mass, or percentage difference. Treat the comparison as qualitative rather than assigning them invented dimensions.

Actor Kieran Bew, who plays Hugh Hammer, described Vermithor in a July 28, 2024 TVLine interview as “a dragon that’s the size of four houses.” That is a figurative description of Vermithor, not a measurement and not a comparison with Vhagar.

Yes, as a narrative possibility—but that does not make him the larger dragon. TIME recounts Jacaerys naming Vermithor and Silverwing as dragons large enough to stand against Vhagar. The point is their potential to confront her, not that Vermithor exceeds her in size.
Rank #2
- House of the Dragon: The Complete Third Season (DVD)
In short, size ranking and battle significance are different questions: Vhagar is bigger, while Vermithor is still formidable enough to matter in a potential contest.
