Its most compelling achievement is the way it brings Ito’s stark, spiraling imagery to the screen; its central risk is compression. In his review of the premiere, GameSpot’s Phil Hornshaw praised the manga-like look and the added force of movement, but argued that rapid pacing sometimes blunted the dread. That tension—not an unqualified triumph—is the clearest way to understand the series.
What is Adult Swim’s Uzumaki?
The series adapts Ito’s horror manga and follows Kirie Goshima and Shuichi Saito as spirals spread through the town of Kurouzu-cho, affecting its residents and surroundings. VIZ Media describes it as a four-episode production made in collaboration between Adult Swim and Production I.G USA. The black-and-white animation is intended to pay homage to the manga’s aesthetic, and the score is by Colin Stetson. VIZ Media’s October 26, 2024 announcement gives those production details.
Adult Swim’s official series page lists episodes 1–4 in both dubbed and subtitled versions, along with the behind-the-scenes extras “Creation” and “Shinto.”
How faithful is the anime to Junji Ito’s manga?
The clearest point of fidelity is visual. In his September 24, 2024 review of the premiere, Phil Hornshaw praised the black-and-white presentation and the adaptation’s transfer of Ito’s imagery. Animation also changes what those images do: movement can make a disturbing idea feel immediate rather than static.

But movement is not automatically an improvement. Hornshaw’s assessment is that some images lose their unsettling quality once animated and can look goofy instead. This is one critic’s response to the first episode, not a verdict on every episode or every viewer’s experience. The useful question is whether a particular scene benefits from motion or whether the stillness of the manga made it more disturbing.
Does the four-episode format preserve the manga’s pacing?
Compression is the adaptation’s major challenge. Hornshaw reported that the four episodes have to cover 600 pages of manga. That is a review-reported figure, rather than an independently verified page count, but it conveys the scale of material being adapted. He also connects the brisk pace to the manga’s serialization in 1998 and 1999, which can read as linked short stories rather than one uninterrupted narrative.

That serial structure matters: a sequence of distinct episodes in the source can build unease through accumulation, while a screen version moving quickly from one event to another may leave less room for suspense to gather. In Hornshaw’s view, the premiere sometimes rushes in a way that undercuts dread. The trade-off is not simply “more story” versus “less story”; it is how much time the adaptation gives each unsettling idea to land.

Adult Swim’s episode page lists the four episodes in dubbed and subtitled versions. Warner Bros. Discovery’s July 26, 2024 announcement scheduled the premiere for September 28, 2024, at 12:30 a.m. during Toonami, with weekly episodes in Japanese and English subtitles; those are historical broadcast details, not a current schedule.

VIZ announced on October 26, 2024 that the series had launched for electronic sell-through on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, Fandango at Home and Microsoft Store. That dated announcement does not establish present-day storefront availability or price, so check the relevant service’s current listing before buying.
For a physical product connected directly to the adaptation, the source manga is the natural choice: search for “Junji Ito Uzumaki manga.” The cited sources establish the adaptation’s relationship to the manga but do not verify a particular edition, format or current price.
