V/H/S/Halloween may be one of the series’ most cohesive and frightening installments, but that is a matter of taste, not a settled franchise ranking. Its strict Halloween theme gives the anthology a stronger sense of unity; its 1-hour-55-minute runtime and uneven shorts also bring back a familiar anthology problem: the quality can vary from segment to segment.
What is V/H/S/Halloween about?
The 2025 film is the eighth entry in the V/H/S horror anthology series. Its premise links Halloween-themed videotapes and the twisted tales on them, with “Diet Phantasma” serving as the wraparound story. The shorts include “Coochie Coochie Coo,” “Ut Supra Sic Infra,” “Fun Size,” “Kidprint,” and “Home Haunt.” Together, the Halloween setting supplies a clear connective idea rather than simply collecting unrelated found-footage scares. The wraparound, directed by Bryan M. Ferguson, centers on a soft-drink test lab. Ferguson told Fangoria that he likes period settings because rapid changes in the present can make a film feel dated quickly.
Does the Halloween theme make it the scariest entry?
It makes the film feel more unified than an anthology whose shorts share only a format. That can strengthen the experience: the stories feel like parts of a Halloween event, and Rotten Tomatoes’ editorial consensus describes the shorts as consistently unnerving. But thematic cohesion is not the same as consistent scares, and neither establishes that this is objectively the scariest V/H/S film.

Critics disagree about how well the parts work together. Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com praised the film’s tonal consistency and “batting average,” calling it one of the series’ best entries. That judgment comes from a search-result excerpt of his review of the 2025 Fantastic Fest premiere; the review page itself could not be verified. By contrast, The Guardian’s Catherine Bray called it a mixed bag, praising “eerily jolly villains and haunted soda” while saying it “could use a bit of an edit.” The Guardian
So “scariest” is best treated as a viewer’s verdict, not a fact the reviews prove. The film offers eerie invention and grotesque shocks, but whether those land as sustained dread depends on what you want from horror: atmosphere, surprise, or graphic impact.

What is the franchise weakness this film struggles with?
The weakness is unevenness: in a multi-director anthology, one short can be memorable while another feels like a long wait between highlights. The Halloween concept helps connect the installments, but it cannot guarantee that each one is equally effective. The Guardian’s mixed-bag assessment and Knockout Horror’s sharply negative overall verdict illustrate that divide. That criticism is one outlet’s opinion, not a franchise-wide consensus. It also points to a related concern: the film’s runtime. Bray’s call for an edit reflects that pacing concern; it does not mean every segment is overlong or that the film has no effective material.

Is it more scary than gory?
Expect graphic horror rather than a mild seasonal pick. Apple TV’s content advisories flag sexual content, violence, and language. Apple TV Knockout Horror argues that the film leans on gore and gross-out effects, while the other reviews highlight unnerving atmosphere and macabre invention. Those are critical readings, not a measurable balance between scares and gore.
If you prefer restrained suspense or want a broadly family-friendly Halloween movie, this is not a safe default. If you enjoy extreme anthology horror and can accept uneven segments, the theme and variety may be enough to carry you through its longer runtime.
