Most confusion about this story comes from treating the separation date, the announcement, and the filing as one event. They are separate points, and each answers a different question.
- December 28, 2018 is the filing date. It is when Usher’s divorce action was reported in Georgia.
- December 24, 2017 is the separation date stated in the documents. It is the date the filing gave for the split, as TMZ reported it. It is not the date anyone announced the separation publicly.
- March 2018 is the public announcement. The couple told the public about the split in a joint statement several months before the filing.

The couple’s joint statement, as reproduced in contemporary reports, read: “After much thought and consideration we have mutually decided to separate as a couple. We remain deeply connected, loving friends who will continue supporting each other through the next phases of our lives. The statement was issued jointly and does not come from a court filing. It also does not give a reason for the separation, and no reporting in the sources cited here supplies one. Any explanation beyond the statement would be speculation.
Who Grace Miguel is in this story
The Associated Press, in its later account of the December 2018 filing, describes Miguel as Usher’s second wife and former manager. That description is the basis for the reference to her professional history with him; it does not describe a separate legal arrangement between them.

What is not yet established
Several parts of the story are less certain than the filing date, and readers should keep them separate from the confirmed timeline.
- Settlement. TMZ reported that a confidential settlement agreement had been reached. That detail comes from TMZ’s account of documents it said it obtained, and the terms were not made public in the reporting cited here.
- Judicial sign-off. The same report said the agreement was awaiting a judge’s approval. The most recent concrete detail in available coverage is that approval was pending.
- Final decree. Reporting from this period does not establish when, or whether, a judge finalized the divorce. Confirming that would require checking the docket of the Georgia court where the case was filed.
- Reason for the split. Neither the joint statement nor the coverage cited here gives a reason.
Until a final decree is confirmed through court records, the most accurate description is that Usher filed for divorce in December 2018 and that the case’s outcome is not established by the reporting cited here.
