IMAX and 3D describe different things: IMAX is a branded cinema presentation system, while 3D is a way of showing separate images to each eye to create a sense of depth. A screening can be IMAX 2D, IMAX 3D, or 3D in a non-IMAX theater. To choose, check the specific film, format, and theater—not just the label.
Is IMAX the same as 3D?
No. IMAX identifies a cinema presentation system and experience; 3D describes stereoscopic imagery. In a 3D screening, the system sends a different view to each eye, and glasses help separate those views. IMAX screenings can be either 2D or 3D, and 3D screenings can take place outside IMAX theaters. IMAX describes its theater experience; a historical IMAX filing excerpt explains the role of polarized or electronic glasses, but does not establish which glasses a theater uses today.
What does an IMAX screening change?
IMAX is not one identical image or room specification everywhere. The projector, screen, theater geometry, and version of the film all affect what appears on screen. The independent reference Every IMAX format explained, updated July 31, 2026, recommends checking which projector is being used, what screen it is projecting onto, and which film master is being shown.
Screen shape and expanded image
Aspect ratio is the relationship between a picture’s width and height. At the same width, a lower ratio produces a taller image. The independent IMAX aspect-ratio guide, updated July 31, 2026, describes 1.90:1 as a common expanded digital IMAX presentation and 1.43:1 as the taller full-height IMAX shape, where the venue and presentation support it.

A tall screen or capable projector cannot reveal picture information that is not in the film’s master. Showing a full expanded frame depends on the source and master as well as the projector and screen. So an “IMAX” listing alone does not tell you whether a movie will fill a taller frame throughout—or at all.
What the IMAX label does not tell you
- Whether it is 3D: look for “3D” in the specific screening listing.
- How tall the image will be: check whether the film has an expanded IMAX presentation and what aspect ratio the local screening uses.
- The projector or screen scale: these depend on the venue and are not established by the IMAX name alone.
Is IMAX 3D better than regular 3D?
There is no universal answer. IMAX 3D combines IMAX presentation with stereoscopic depth; regular 3D uses stereoscopic depth without necessarily using an IMAX presentation system. The comparison depends on the particular movie version and theater. The available sources do not establish that IMAX 3D is always brighter, sharper, or more comfortable than other 3D presentations.

For a useful comparison, check whether both screenings are actually 3D, whether the film’s IMAX version has an expanded aspect ratio, and what the theater says about its presentation. Comfort and perceived brightness can vary by viewer and projection system, so the format name by itself cannot settle those questions.

- Check the format on the ticket listing. Choose a screening explicitly marked 3D if you want depth. Choose a 2D screening if you do not.
- Look up the film’s IMAX presentation. If the expanded image matters to you, check whether the movie has an expanded IMAX version and the aspect ratio the local theater will show.
- Consider the actual room. Screen size, shape, and projection system vary. The IMAX label alone does not establish which equipment or image you will get.
- Compare current local showtimes and ticket prices. Availability and prices vary by theater and change over time, so use the specific venue’s current listing.
For a concrete, film-specific example, IMAX Corporation said in a 2018 announcement that its expanded 1.9:1 presentation of Avengers: Infinity War showed up to 26% more image than standard theaters. That was the company’s claim for that film and presentation—not a general figure for IMAX movies or theaters. IMAX’s 2018 comparison explains the example.
