The U.S. Government Publishing Office dates JVC’s VHS introduction to 1976; its timeline places the first movie available on LaserDisc, Jaws, in 1978. Other authoritative histories date VHS to 1977, depending on which introduction or market milestone they describe.
VHS or LaserDisc: Which came first?
VHS preceded LaserDisc. The U.S. Government Publishing Office’s 2008 timeline gives 1976 for JVC’s VHS introduction and 1978 for Jaws as the first movie available on LaserDisc. The Library of Congress and Panasonic Holdings instead place VHS’s introduction or first market appearance in 1977. All these dates put VHS first.
Why do sources give two VHS dates?
The sources describe different milestones rather than establishing one universally used definition of “introduced.” The Government Publishing Office’s timeline says JVC introduced VHS in 1976. The Library of Congress describes the VHS system as introduced in 1977, while Panasonic’s corporate history says the first VHS home video was put on the market that year. Panasonic also describes VHS as a recording scheme jointly developed by Panasonic and JVC, based on JVC proposals.
Panasonic’s account is specific about the market milestone: “The first VHS home video, with outstanding features of long recording capability and clear and sharp screen image, was put on the market in 1977.” The difference between a 1976 introduction and a 1977 market appearance does not change the comparison: both precede LaserDisc’s 1978 movie milestone.

How are VHS and LaserDisc different?
VHS is a home recording and playback system using half-inch videotape in a cassette. LaserDisc is a videodisc format. They are different types of media, so the chronology answers which arrived earlier; it does not make LaserDisc a direct replacement for VHS.
