Hatsune Miku is both singing-voice software and the fictional virtual singer associated with it—not a human celebrity. Her story is the story of a tool built by Crypton Future Media, a voice shaped from recordings by voice actress Saki Fujita, and a global community of creators who made songs and other works with her.
What is Hatsune Miku?
Crypton Future Media released Hatsune Miku on August 31, 2007, as a singing voice synthesizer product. A creator enters a melody and lyrics, then uses the software to produce and refine a synthesized vocal. In that sense, Miku’s voicebank can be used like a musical instrument: it gives musicians a voice to work with, rather than recording a human singer performing each song.
Crypton, a music technology company based in Sapporo, developed the product and licenses the character. The official VOCALOID history identifies Miku’s release as a turning point in the rise of Vocaloid culture.
Is Hatsune Miku a real person?
No. Miku is a virtual character paired with voice synthesis software, not a person with a private life or personal biography. Her familiar design—long aqua twin-tails and a fictional age of 16—belongs to the character profile, not to a real individual.

The synthesized voice is based on recordings of Japanese voice actress Saki Fujita. Fujita is a real person; Miku is the fictional singer and software identity built around that vocal source. The two should not be confused.
Who created Miku, and why?
Crypton Future Media created and released the Miku product. Its purpose was not simply to supply a character for prerecorded songs: it gave users a way to make their own music with a distinctive synthesized voice. In a 2023 Associated Press interview, Crypton CEO Hiroyuki Itoh described the goal this way: “We wanted to make it easy to use for amateurs who want to make music as a hobby,” as quoted in the September 2, 2023 AP report.

How did Miku become an icon?
Miku’s reach grew through participation. The official VOCALOID history connects her 2007 release with bedroom music production and original works shared on Nico Nico, describing that period as the beginning of “vocaloid culture.” Users could make songs and circulate them online, inviting others to respond with new music, remixes, videos, illustrations, and related creations.
That creator-led ecosystem is central to Miku’s story: the character became a shared platform for works made by many people, not just a singer of songs composed by Crypton. Crypton’s English character profile describes Miku as featured in over 100,000 songs. The profile does not give a publication date for that figure, so it is best understood as an undated figure shown on the current profile rather than a count tied to a particular year.

How do Hatsune Miku concerts work?
At live shows, Miku appears as a projected virtual performer while human musicians play onstage. The result is a hybrid concert: the singer is virtual, but the musicians, venue, and audience are physically present. The AP’s 2023 account describes this stage format and the technology behind the character.
In a March 9, 2026 anniversary announcement, Crypton reported that the HATSUNE MIKU EXPO tour series had visited 50 cities and staged 120 performances. Those are Crypton’s cumulative totals as reported in that announcement, not a current concert schedule or an independently audited count. See Crypton’s announcement for the company’s account.

What does “Miku” mean for fans and creators?
For a musician, Miku can mean a voicebank for composing and producing songs. For an audience member, she can be a character encountered through music, videos, artwork, or a live projection. For the wider community, she is a recognizable figure that makes individual creations feel connected. The most useful way to understand the icon is therefore not as a person whose life unfolds offstage, but as a collaboration among Crypton, Fujita’s recorded voice, software, music makers, performers, and fans.
Someone interested in making music would look for Hatsune Miku voice software; someone interested in a concert would need current event information, while collecting is a separate fan activity. Editions, compatibility, prices, event dates, and specific merchandise availability can change, so check current official product or event listings before making plans.
