A quieter response can take more effort: stay with what they are saying, notice the feeling and circumstances around it, and ask what they need before deciding what to do. That kind of deep listening—and the curiosity to understand another person’s experience—are ordinary human capacities worth practicing.
What does it mean to really listen?
Deep listening is more than waiting for a turn to speak. It means attending to the words, the emotions they may carry, and the context that gives them meaning. A 2023 review of deep listening in medical encounters describes habits that can support this practice: curiosity, openness, reflective self-questioning, and epistemic reciprocity—the willingness to learn from another person rather than assume you already understand. Its focus is clinical care, so the ideas are useful beyond medicine as principles, not as a universal script for friendship or family life.
In everyday conversation, that can mean asking a question instead of filling in a gap with your own explanation. It can also mean noticing your impulse to fix the problem and pausing long enough to find out whether advice is wanted.
Why is listening easy to undervalue?
Listening can look passive from the outside, even when it involves sustained attention and restraint. In three studies involving 1,509 participants, researchers found that people perceived as good listeners were associated with more positive listener attributes and evaluations. The findings concern people’s perceptions and interpersonal evaluations; they do not establish that a particular listening style produces long-term benefits in every relationship or setting. There is no single visible style that proves someone is listening well. Eye contact, quick verbal responses, or repeating a speaker’s words may feel reassuring to one person and uncomfortable or unnatural to another. A 2026 review of interpersonal listening research highlights how expectations such as empathy and non-judgment can be ambiguous, and how attempts at perspective-taking can slip into projection. Quiet or analytical listening should not be treated as evidence of indifference simply because it looks different.
What is interpersonal curiosity?
Curiosity is often discussed as a desire to learn facts or solve intellectual puzzles. A 2025 review notes that research has paid much less attention to curiosity about other people’s experiences. Interpersonal curiosity means wanting to understand what another person thinks, feels, values, or has lived through—not treating them as a puzzle to solve, but recognizing that their perspective may differ from yours. One study summarized in that review asked 389 seventh-grade students to submit questions about close friends, teachers, and caregivers. Across the submissions, researchers examined 2,863 questions and identified several forms of interpersonal curiosity. Those school-age findings help show what questions about other people can look like; they are not proof that curiosity always creates closeness or that the same patterns apply to everyone.
The review also quotes educator and psychologist G. Stanley Hall, who wrote in Aspects of Child Life and Education (1921, p. 126): “But there’s so many things I want to know.” The line captures the appetite to ask, rather than offering evidence about the effects of curiosity.

How to practice listening and curiosity
- Give the speaker room. Attend to what they say before composing your reply. If you are unsure what a pause means, let it be a pause rather than assuming they expect you to fill it.
- Ask one sincere follow-up. Choose a question that invites the person’s own account, such as “What was that like for you?” Avoid turning the conversation into an interrogation or pushing for details they have not offered.
- Check what kind of response they want. You might ask, “Would it help more to talk it through, hear ideas, or work out a practical next step?” Their answer is more reliable than guessing from your own preferences.
- Notice and correct projection. If you catch yourself thinking “I know exactly how you feel,” treat that as a prompt to ask what you may be missing, not as proof that your experience is the same.
These are options, not a checklist that every conversation must follow. A person may want practical help, quiet company, or no further questions; what feels attentive depends on the speaker, the relationship, and the moment.

Listening and interpersonal curiosity can help people receive information and explore another person’s experience, but neither guarantees kindness, accuracy, or a better relationship. Findings on curiosity include associations and context-dependent patterns, not proof of a universal cause-and-effect result. The evidence base is growing, and some findings come from school-age samples.

People also differ in what they need and how they communicate. Cultural expectations, individual preferences, and the situation all shape whether a response feels attentive. The goal is not to perform a standard set of gestures; it is to remain open to being corrected about what the other person means or wants.
Nor should hardship be treated as a reliable route to hidden strengths. A 2020 review of the hidden-talents approach describes mixed findings and challenges in interpreting claims that adversity enhances abilities. Difficult experiences do not automatically produce listening skill, resilience, or any other gift.
