PerthNow’s “Perthiest Perthonalities” is a 20-entry list published on 11 June 2023. It presents people, and some groups of people, as embodiments of what it means to be a “Perthonality,” with entries listed in no particular order. It is one outlet’s editorial selection from that year, not an official honour, a measured ranking, or a current list.

What the 2023 list is, and what it is not

The list’s only organising idea is local association and recognition. PerthNow does not set out a qualification, a scoring method, or a body of evidence for choosing its picks. The selections are a reading of the outlet’s own judgement about who stands for Perth’s public character.

Three points should frame any use of it:

  • It is dated. The article was published on 11 June 2023. Roles, residences and public profiles described in it may have changed since then, and this article does not confirm that every biographical detail still holds.
  • It is subjective. The opening frames Perth as remote and says the city has “spawned some truly unique characters.” That is PerthNow’s editorial characterisation, not a measured fact.
  • It contains no statistics. The article includes numbers within biographical descriptions, but it does not offer a study, a survey, or independently verified figures about Perthonalities as a group.

The 20 entries

The entries appear in this order in the 2023 article, which is not a ranking:

  • The mystery person behind The Bell Tower Times
  • Laurence Escalante
  • Tony Galati
  • Nathan, Nat and Shaun
  • Rick Ardon and Susannah Carr
  • Troy Mercanti
  • Mark McGowan
  • John Hughes
  • Kate Walsh
  • Gina Rinehart
  • Basil Zempilas
  • Ben Cousins
  • Fat Cat
  • Daniel Ricciardo
  • Sophia and Troy Barbagallo
  • Justin Langer
  • Joel Creasey
  • Rove McManus
  • John Kizon
  • Heath Ledger

Several entries are groups or pairs rather than individuals: Nathan, Nat and Shaun; Rick Ardon and Susannah Carr; and Sophia and Troy Barbagallo. Fat Cat is included as a familiar Western Australian cultural symbol rather than a person. The mystery person behind The Bell Tower Times is included without a name, so the list cannot be checked against a named individual for that entry.

Kinds of Perth connection on the list

The article’s reasons for inclusion vary widely. Comparing them shows that “Perthonality” covers several different relationships to the city, which is useful if you want to judge whether a given pick fits your own definition.

Local satire and media presence

The Bell Tower Times entry, and the outlet’s satirical role, belong to the category of people whose public profile is built through local media and humour. Their Perth link is the content they produce about the city.

Businesses and public recognition

Some picks are included for business standing and the public recognition that comes with it. Gina Rinehart and the Tony Galati entry sit most naturally in this group, though the article’s own wording on each should be read in context.

Sport and entertainment careers

Several entries rest on careers in sport or entertainment, including Ben Cousins, Daniel Ricciardo, Justin Langer, Rove McManus and Heath Ledger. Their Perth link can be a home base, an upbringing, or a long association with local audiences. The 2023 article does not separate those cases for each name.

Political prominence

Political figures on the list, such as Mark McGowan, are included for their public prominence in Western Australian politics. Office-holding and public roles change, so any statement of current position should be checked against a current source.

Long-running local broadcasting

Presenters with long runs on local broadcasting are a separate category. Their connection is sustained visibility to Perth audiences over many years rather than a single high-profile moment.

Cultural symbols

Fat Cat illustrates the least personal category. Inclusion rests on familiarity as a local symbol, not on a biography.

Bell Tower Times and the Bell Tower attraction are separate

The Bell Tower Times is a satirical outlet. The Bell Tower is a separate visitor attraction in Perth whose official site describes tours and ticketed experiences. The two names are easy to confuse, and nothing in the 2023 article or the attraction’s own material establishes an affiliation between them. Readers should not assume that one endorses or operates the other.

Reading the phrases “Perthiest” and “Perthonality”

The title uses “Perthiest Perthonalities,” and the article’s own framing includes “Perthiest of them all” and “Perthonality.” These are editorial wording. No evidence in the available reporting shows how often people search for these terms, so do not present them as established search terms or as an accepted local term. If you quote them, attribute them to PerthNow and date them to 2023.

Checking the list before you repeat it

  • Attribute the list to PerthNow and date it to 11 June 2023.
  • Describe each entry in the present tense only after checking a current source for that person’s role, residence or title.
  • Do not describe the picks as an official ranking, a poll result, or a measured selection of Perth’s most notable people.
  • Keep the Bell Tower Times and the Bell Tower attraction distinct.
  • Treat the group and pair entries as the article presents them, and do not assume that every member of a group was individually assessed.

For documentary viewers, the list works best as a starting map of local figures and a sense of how one Perth outlet frames its city. It is not a viewing guide, and it does not establish which of these people appear in documentary material.
