In DC Comics, Ultraman is the evil Superman counterpart of Earth-3 and a member of the Crime Syndicate—not the Japanese tokusatsu hero who shares his name. Earth-3 reverses the moral order of the main DC world: ambition, greed, and conquest are rewarded, and Ultraman is among the villains who rule it.
Who is Ultraman in DC Comics?
Ultraman is DC’s alternate-world counterpart to Superman. He belongs to Earth-3, a world DC describes as an opposite of Earth-0, where the usual heroic and villainous roles are reversed. There, Ultraman is part of the Crime Syndicate, alongside counterparts such as Owlman and Superwoman. DC’s Ultraman profile provides its current summary of the character and Earth-3.
This is a comics continuity distinct from the Japanese Ultraman tokusatsu franchise. The shared name does not make the characters part of the same story or universe.
When did Ultraman and the Crime Syndicate first appear?
DC lists Justice League of America #29 (1964) as the first appearance of Earth-3’s Crime Syndicate. The original introduction continues in #30, making the two-issue story the starting point for the team’s early version. DC’s history of the Crime Syndicate covers that original story.

A first appearance is not the same thing as a definitive origin. DC has revisited Earth-3 and the Syndicate in later publishing eras, changing the context and retelling how the team came together.
How does Ultraman change across DC continuities?
The original Earth-Three story
The 1964 Justice League of America #29–30 story introduces Earth-Three and its Crime Syndicate as counterparts to the Justice League. It establishes the foundational reversal premise, but it should not be treated as a complete biography that governs every later version.

The New 52 and Forever Evil
Forever Evil is the New 52 era’s universe-wide event featuring the Crime Syndicate. DC’s listing for issue #3 describes the Syndicate ruling the world after the heroes’ apparent deaths. That makes it useful for seeing the team in this event-era role, not a universal account of Ultraman’s origin. DC’s Forever Evil #3 page gives the issue’s premise.
The post–Death Metal origin
DC’s 2021 Crime Syndicate miniseries presents a new origin for the team in the reborn multiverse following Dark Nights: Death Metal. Its first issue includes an Ultraman origin backup. Writer Andy Schmidt described the approach as establishing “the Crime Syndicate’s origin story for the first time—how and why they came together.” This refers to the series’ origin approach, not an absence of earlier Crime Syndicate stories. The series went on sale March 2, 2021. DC’s announcement and official issue listing describe the series and its launch.

What happened to Earth-3?
DC’s current Ultraman profile says the Anti-Monitor eliminated Earth-3 and that some members of the Crime Syndicate fled to the main Earth. That is the profile’s framing of the world’s fate; it should be read alongside the later reworkings of Earth-3 rather than as a timeless summary that settles every continuity question.
