The reveal comes in the finale. This article discusses it, so spoilers follow.
What the finale reveals about Dave Gudsen
During the finale interrogation, viewers learn that Dave Gudsen does not look the way the show had led them to believe. The twist is about his physical appearance, not a hidden identity plot. Lehane explains it as a matter of character: Gudsen projects an image of himself as a hero while he is doing terrible things. In other words, the reveal is meant to show how the character sees himself, and the gap between that self-image and his actions is the point.
Why the team kept it from Apple
Lehane told Variety that he pitched the reveal early in development and that the team did not share it with Apple, because they expected the platform to object. His account was reported by 9to5Mac on August 18, 2025. Apple’s own reaction is not described in the reporting beyond Lehane’s recollection, so treat the claim that Apple objected as his account rather than an independently confirmed fact.
I remember the day I came in and said, “Dave is not Dave. Dave does not look like Taron Egerton.” It was pretty early, and we hid it from Apple because we knew they’d hate it — and they did. And everybody was like, “What?!” And I was like, “No, he’s projecting! That storyline is about his projection. He’s projecting who he is.”…This is a guy who walked around thinking of himself as a hero, who was simultaneously running out and doing some really terrible things.

Is a second season confirmed?
No. Asked about a possible second season, Lehane said:
We have plans if it were to go forward, but we don’t know if it will or won’t…If it goes someplace, we have a plan; we know where it can go. If it doesn’t, I’m moving on to the next thing. I did the show I wanted to do.

Apple describes Smoke as a fictional drama inspired by true events and by the Firebug podcast. That framing matters for how the finale reveal should be read. The Gudsen twist is a storytelling device that Lehane describes in terms of character psychology, and it is not a documented fact about any real person or case. Viewers interested in the true events behind the show will need to look at the podcast and its reporting, which are separate from the series.

The reporting on this reveal rests on Lehane’s account. It does not establish how Apple reviewed the script or what its executives thought of the idea, and that is why the Apple objection described above should be read as the creator’s recollection.
