What happened to Far Cry 4 on Steam?
Players noticed altered content after a Steam update to Far Cry 4, Ubisoft’s 2014 open-world first-person shooter. On April 4, 2025, Ubisoft community developer Patricia Brochu said content intended specifically for the Japanese version had mistakenly been uploaded to the worldwide Steam build. Ubisoft described the result as unintended changes to models and assets, including censorship.
The visible change was reported as nudity being covered. The available accounts do not establish that the game’s content as a whole was removed or changed.
What did Ubisoft say caused the change?
In a statement posted in a Far Cry community discussion on Reddit, Brochu said: “After looking into it, we confirmed that there was a mistake during a recent update: content meant specifically for the Japanese version of the game was mistakenly uploaded to the worldwide (WW) version on Steam. This resulted in unintended changes, including censored models and assets.”

That is Ubisoft’s explanation of the incident. The company did not publicly detail the internal depot or file-selection process behind the mistaken upload, so the specific technical cause beyond the regional-build mix-up is not established.
Did Ubisoft fix the Far Cry 4 censorship update?
Ubisoft said it had resolved the issue by reuploading the correct data to the worldwide Steam depot. That is the company’s account of the correction; the available reports do not independently verify every player’s installation or confirm that every copy updated successfully.

If altered content still appears
Ubisoft advised affected players to restart Steam and check for updates. These are the steps the company recommended, rather than independently tested troubleshooting instructions.
- Exit and restart Steam.
- Check whether Far Cry 4 has an update available and allow Steam to apply it.
Did Ubisoft announce a policy to censor Far Cry?
No. Brochu said the incident was an error tied to content for a specific regional version and stated that Ubisoft had no plans to censor Far Cry. This reflects the company’s position as stated on April 4, 2025; it does not establish what Ubisoft may decide in the future.

What is Far Cry 4’s content rating?
Steam describes Far Cry 4 as an open-world first-person shooter with solo and co-op play. Its listing gives the game an ESRB Mature 17+ rating and includes nudity among its content descriptors. That rating information is separate from Ubisoft’s explanation of the 2025 Steam update.
