Rich Homie Quan died in Atlanta on September 5, 2024. The Fulton County Medical Examiner later classified his death as accidental drug toxicity involving fentanyl, alprazolam, codeine and promethazine. His hits “Type of Way,” “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” and Rich Gang’s “Lifestyle” place him in a defining mid-2010s moment for Atlanta rap. The artists highlighted in 2025 coverage show a scene still changing—but not a single, officially defined generation of Quan’s successors.

What was Rich Homie Quan’s cause of death?

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Quan, born Dequantes Devontay Lamar, died at an Atlanta hospital on September 5, 2024. The office’s initial confirmation did not give a cause. On October 2, the Medical Examiner’s determination was reported by the Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times: accidental drug toxicity involving fentanyl, alprazolam, codeine and promethazine. That is the official classification; the reports do not establish further circumstances, and it should not be read as evidence about intent or how the substances were obtained.

Which songs made Rich Homie Quan prominent?

Quan’s breakthrough and best-known records connected Atlanta’s local momentum with a national audience. The Associated Press identifies “Type of Way” and “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” among his key hits, and reports that he appeared on Rich Gang’s “Lifestyle,” produced by London on da Track.

  • “Type of Way” helped establish Quan as a prominent solo artist.
  • “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” became his highest-charting solo single, peaking at No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2015, according to the AP’s 2024 report.
  • “Lifestyle” placed him alongside other artists in the Rich Gang collaboration.
  • Rich as in Spirit, released in 2018, was his debut studio album, the AP reports.

These touchstones capture a particular stage of Quan’s career; they are not a complete account of Atlanta rap or of the artists who followed him.

Where did Quan fit in Atlanta rap’s longer history?

Quan emerged during a mid-2010s period when Atlanta rap was again reaching national audiences through artists, collaborations and records that grew from a locally rooted scene. NPR’s 2023 historical overview places that moment within a much longer story: Atlanta hip-hop has moved through successive eras rather than holding to one sound or roster. Each wave has its own artists and conditions, even as the city remains a central force in rap.

That history makes “next generation” a moving description, not a formal category. A newer artist can be part of Atlanta’s current moment without sharing Quan’s style, drawing directly from his work or standing in a documented successor relationship to him. The historical overview does not establish a specific line of influence from Quan to the newer names appearing in recent coverage.

Who are the newer Atlanta rappers appearing in recent coverage?

Two 2025 publications offer snapshots rather than definitive rankings. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution highlighted Pluto, YK Niece, BunnaB and Bankroll Ni in its coverage of Atlanta rap’s then-current moment and emphasized women’s growing prominence. VOX ATL also published a 2025 selection focused on underground artists.

Read together, these sources point to a scene with multiple visible voices and levels of exposure—not one unified sound or settled list of who comes next. They document who received attention in those particular 2025 features; they do not establish a permanent ranking, a complete roster or direct musical inheritance from Quan.

How to compare Atlanta’s generations without forcing a successor story

A useful comparison asks what each source actually covers. NPR traces a broad history across eras; the AP’s career account identifies Quan’s records and achievements; the AJC and VOX ATL show which newer artists their 2025 coverage brought into view. Those are different kinds of evidence, so they should not be treated as a single ranking or an influence map.

  • Period: Quan’s best-known songs belong to his mid-2010s breakthrough, while the newer-artist coverage is a 2025 snapshot.
  • Musical lineage: Atlanta’s sound has shifted over time, but the cited coverage does not establish that every newer artist shares Quan’s sound or derives directly from him.
  • Visibility: National hits and chart positions are one measure of reach; local and underground features show other forms of attention. They are not interchangeable measures of artistic importance.
  • Representation: The AJC’s emphasis on women’s growing prominence is part of its account of that current moment, not a claim that one article captures every artist in the city.

On the evidence available, Quan is best understood as an important artist of one Atlanta rap era, while the next generation remains plural and still taking shape.
