In a report published on 4 August 2024, PerthNow quoted He saying, “I couldn’t even finish it.” That is one journalist’s attributed reaction—not the result of a documented taste test ranking McDonald’s menu items.
What was Gary He’s “worst” McDonald’s item in Australia?
It was McDonald’s Australia’s potato scallop. PerthNow reported that He, an American food journalist visiting Australia, was curious about the item’s bad press and tried it. He’s reported verdict was brief: he could not finish it.
The account does not give detailed tasting notes or explain what he disliked. It also does not document a comparison with other McDonald’s products. “Australia’s worst item” is the story’s framing of his reaction, not an objective or comprehensive ranking.
Was the potato scallop still on the menu?
PerthNow said the limited-time item appeared to have disappeared from the menu by the time its story ran in August 2024. McDonald’s Australia later announced a separate limited-time 2026 promotion featuring selected items from Japan, Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom; that announcement does not confirm a potato scallop return. Check the company’s dated announcement or current Australian menu for present availability rather than assuming the 2023 item can be ordered.

PerthNow noted that the product’s 2023 release revived a familiar naming debate: some people call this kind of potato item a “scallop,” while others use “cake” or “fritters.” The report does not establish one universally accepted name or measure how widely each term is used. Its wording describes disagreement, not a national consensus.
How does the review fit Gary He’s McDonald’s project?
The Australian reaction is one episode in a broader documentary project, not a chain-wide verdict. Atlas Obscura’s 2024 profile describes He as a James Beard Award-winning photojournalist whose project began in 2018 and documented McDonald’s in more than 50 countries across six continents. He recorded local menu adaptations as well as restaurant design and how people use those spaces.

He financed the project himself and did not work with or receive support from McDonald’s, according to the Atlas Obscura interview. The resulting book is McAtlas: A Global Guide to the Golden Arches. He described the value of direct reporting this way: “When you’re able to walk up to a building or taste a food item yourself, you can trim all that.”

In an Atlas Obscura podcast transcript published on 5 August 2025, He traced his interest in local menu adaptations to a Ramadan meal at a McDonald’s in Morocco. He described it as including chebakia, dates, Harira soup and a yogurt milk beverage. The encounter helped prompt a project aimed at documenting local variations that might otherwise go unrecorded. He recalled asking, “How does this not exist? How is this not being documented in some sort of serious way?”
