UMG denied that it interfered against Drake or any of its artists. Drake later sued the company over its promotion and monetization of Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us”; on October 9, 2025, a federal judge dismissed Drake’s amended complaint. What did UMG say about the Drake and Kendrick Lamar beef?
In late 2024, after Drake made pre-lawsuit legal filings alleging manipulative promotion of Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” UMG rejected the suggestion that it had acted to undermine him. Reuters reported the company’s statement: “The suggestion that UMG would do anything to undermine any of its artists is offensive and untrue.” That was UMG’s denial, not a judicial finding.
UMG also defended itself after Drake filed suit, saying he sought “to weaponize the legal process to silence an artist’s creative expression.” That was the company’s characterization of the lawsuit, not a court’s conclusion.
What did Drake’s lawsuit allege?
On January 15, 2025, Drake sued UMG in federal court in New York. He alleged that the company defamed him by publishing and promoting “Not Like Us.” Those assertions were allegations in a complaint, not established facts merely because they were filed in court. The Associated Press reported that Lamar was not named as a defendant.
