U2’s “Bad” at Live Aid: What Happened During the 12-Minute Performance

U2’s Live Aid set was meant to include three songs. Bono’s journey into the crowd during “Bad” extended the performance, “Pride” was dropped, and the band later learned viewers had seen the moment as a highlight.

At Live Aid on 13 July 1985, U2 planned to play three songs at Wembley Stadium. They performed “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “Bad,” but Bono’s trip into the crowd during “Bad” stretched the set and “Pride (In the Name of Love)” was dropped. The moment became a defining exposure milestone for the band—not proof that one performance alone made U2’s career.

What happened when U2 played “Bad” at Live Aid?

U2 took the Wembley stage during the period of The Unforgettable Fire. Jack Nicholson introduced the band to the packed stadium, according to U2.com’s account of the performance. The planned set was “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” “Bad,” and “Pride (In the Name of Love).”

During “Bad,” Bono left the stage and moved into the crowd. The song ran long, and the band had to omit “Pride.” U2’s retrospective describes the performance as a 12-minute rendition; the band’s event page says 14 minutes. BBC producer Jeff Griffin also recalled a 12-minute performance in a 2013 Guardian interview.

Why did U2 drop “Pride”?

The set ran over because “Bad” expanded while Bono was away from the stage and among the audience. With the allotted performance time consumed, U2 did not play the third planned song, “Pride (In the Name of Love).” The official event account confirms both the original three-song plan and the omission.

How long was “Bad” at Live Aid?

The best-supported account is 12 minutes: U2.com’s later retrospective and Griffin’s recollection both give that duration. An older U2.com event page gives 14 minutes, so the exact length is disputed in the available accounts. Griffin characterized the performance as electrifying, but his recollection does not establish a precise timing method.

Why did the band think the performance had gone wrong?

From the band’s perspective, the extended song and Bono’s disappearance created uncertainty. U2.com’s retrospective recounts that Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen, The Edge, and manager Paul McGuinness were anxious or confused while Bono was in the crowd. McGuinness thought Bono had blown it.

The band later learned that viewers and observers saw the moment differently. The Edge said, “It really took us by surprise when people started talking about U2 as one of the noteworthy performances of the day,” in U2.com’s retrospective. Clayton likewise came to see Bono’s instinct as fitting the emotional scale of the occasion: “Bono’s journey really meant something, it carried the emotion of the day to people. So his performers’s instinct was right,” he said.

Did Live Aid make U2 famous?

Live Aid introduced U2 to a new audience, as the band’s official history puts it. That makes the performance a major exposure milestone, but the chronology does not support saying it single-handedly made the band’s career. The Joshua Tree arrived in 1987, two years after Live Aid; U2.com notes that “With or Without You” and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” singles from that album, reached the top of the US singles chart.

The performance was also part of a much larger broadcast event. Griffin described Live Aid as a demanding international television production involving satellite links, a rotating stage, and six weeks of preparation. That context helps explain how a performance at Wembley could reach viewers beyond the stadium, but it does not provide a U2-specific audience count or prove a particular sales increase. The sources cited here establish no immediate post-show sales figure for the band.
