U.S. Navy Confirmed Three UFO Videos Were Genuine—But Not What They Showed

The Navy confirmed the FLIR1, Gimbal and GoFast clips were actual Navy videos. The confirmation did not identify the objects or establish an extraterrestrial origin.

Yes. In September 2019, the U.S. Navy confirmed that three widely circulated clips were copies of actual Navy videos and said the objects in them were “unidentified aerial phenomena” (UAP). That confirmed the footage’s authenticity and the Navy’s classification—not that the objects were extraterrestrial or that the Navy knew what they were.

Which three Navy videos were confirmed?

The clips are commonly known as FLIR1, Gimbal and GoFast. The Department of Defense (DoD) said one was recorded in November 2004 and the other two in January 2015. Those dates and the count of three come from the DoD’s April 27, 2020 statement.

The videos had circulated after unauthorized releases in 2007 and 2017. In September 2019, Navy spokesperson Joseph Gradisher told The Black Vault that the Navy designated the objects in the clips as UAP. The Navy’s July 2020 public affairs briefing card later summarized the confirmation as establishing that the circulating clips were copies of actual Navy videos.

What did “real” mean?

It meant the clips were genuine Navy footage, not that the objects had been identified. Gradisher’s statement was: “The Navy designates the objects contained in these videos as unidentified aerial phenomena.” The term described observations of unauthorized or unidentified aircraft or objects in military-controlled training-range airspace. “Unidentified” records that the objects had not been identified in the Navy’s terminology; it is not an explanation of their origin or capabilities.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Accordingly, the Navy’s confirmation did not establish that the objects were aliens, define what they could do, or show that all three videos depicted the same kind of object. The current investigative disposition of the objects is not established by these historical statements.

How did the Navy confirmation differ from the DoD release?

Action Date and source What it established What it did not establish
Navy confirmation September 2019; Joseph Gradisher’s statement reported by The Black Vault on September 10, 2019, and summarized in a Navy briefing card dated July 24, 2020 The circulating clips were copies of actual Navy videos; the Navy called the objects UAP. The objects’ identities or origins.
DoD public-release authorization April 27, 2020; Department of Defense statement DoD authorized public release of the three unclassified videos and linked them through the Naval Air Systems Command FOIA Reading Room. The objects’ identities or origins.

The distinction matters because the clips circulated publicly before the government’s authorized release. In September 2019, Gradisher said, “The Navy has not released the videos to the general public.” The later April 2020 action was DoD’s authorization to release them, not the Navy’s original publication of footage already circulating.

Why did DoD release the videos?

DoD said it was releasing the footage to clear up misconceptions about whether the circulating videos were real and whether there was more footage. Its statement said a review found that the authorized release would not reveal sensitive capabilities or systems and would not impinge on subsequent investigations of military airspace incursions. That is DoD’s description of its own review, not an independent evaluation.
