The trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire moves the Monsterverse past the rivalry of the previous film. Godzilla and Kong are forced to work together against a new threat. The film was released in March 2024, so this is a retrospective on what the trailer set up and what the film’s official material says about it.

What the trailer sets up

The central hook is a reversal. Godzilla vs. Kong pitted the two Titans against each other. The trailer for the sequel shifts the premise to a team-up, with both monsters confronting a threat larger than either one of them. Ars Technica’s December 2023 coverage of the trailer carried the headline “Two Titans team up to defeat a new foe in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire trailer,” which captures the same shift.

The film’s official movie site gives the premise in promotional language: “Godzilla and Kong are forced to team up against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence—and our own.” That line is marketing copy from the studio’s site, not a statement from a filmmaker or cast member.

Where the film sits in the Monsterverse

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is an entry in Legendary’s cinematic Monsterverse and follows Godzilla vs. Kong. Viewers who skipped that film will find the trailer’s references to the two Titans’ rivalry harder to place, because the sequel builds directly on the earlier story rather than restarting it.

Who made it

Legendary’s official trailer listing identifies Adam Wingard as the director and describes the film as a Legendary Pictures production within the Monsterverse. Wingard is the credited director for the trailer listing; the listing does not describe further crew roles.

What the official synopsis says the film covers

The official film page describes a story about the Titans’ histories and origins and about the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond. It also frames the film as a mythic battle connecting the Titans and humanity. Those are the only plot elements the official material commits to.

Trailer footage is a weaker guide than the synopsis. Shots of locations, creatures or characters in a trailer do not confirm plot points, and readers should treat any specific storyline detail that goes beyond the synopsis as unconfirmed by the studio’s own description.

Release dates

The official movie site lists the following dates. They are historical now, and the trailer’s timing should be read against them.

Release Date Source
United States, theatrical and IMAX March 29, 2024 Official movie site
International, start of release March 27, 2024 Official movie site

Because the trailer preceded these dates by several months, its December 2023 coverage reflects the film’s pre-release marketing window rather than its current availability.

Reading the trailer today

  • Confirmed: the Monsterverse setting, the follow-on from Godzilla vs. Kong, Adam Wingard as director, and the team-up premise against an undiscovered threat.
  • Stated in the official synopsis: the Titans’ origins, Skull Island, and a mythic battle linking the Titans and humanity.
  • Not established by the official material: the identity or nature of the new threat beyond the synopsis’s description, and any plot detail visible only in trailer footage.

For a film that is now more than two years past its release, the trailer is most useful as a record of how the studio chose to frame the sequel: as an alliance story, not a continuation of the earlier fight.

Ars Technica’s coverage, the official movie site, and Legendary’s trailer listing are the primary references for the claims above. Figures such as box-office results or audience reception are outside the scope of the official trailer material and are not addressed here.
