Released July 25, 2025, it moves among vintage ballads, rockabilly, psychedelia, Southern rock and ragtime while keeping Childers’s storytelling and rough-edged vocal character in view. The resulting risk is stylistic rather than a documented declaration of intent—and critics heard the experimentation as a reward.
What makes Snipe Hunter sound different?
Rick Rubin produced the album, with additional production by Childers and Nick Sanborn; Shawn Everett mixed it. Sony Music Canada’s release announcement lists 13 songs, a sequence that makes room for sharply different musical approaches rather than one dominant genre.

Pitchfork reviewer writes, “On Snipe Hunter, however, he lets everything hang in the wind, blending vintage ballads, rockabilly, and psychedelia with renewed artistic freedom.” That is a critic’s characterization, not a statement of Childers’s intent. The review describes “Snipe Hunt” as Southern rock and “Bitin’ List” as a ragtime stomp, and notes Hindu references in “Tirtha Yatra” and “Tomcat and a Dandy.”
The breadth is the point: the album’s identity comes partly from letting contrasting styles sit beside one another. Pitchfork called it Childers’s “most free-spirited and pleasantly weird album to date,” an assessment that captures the looseness critics heard without making “weird” a formal genre label.

How does the record balance experimentation with familiar Childers?
Its adventurous arrangements do not mean the album abandons the qualities listeners associate with Childers. His storytelling and gritty vocal presence remain recognizable across the stylistic shifts. The production gives the songs a polished studio setting, while the range of arrangements keeps the record from settling into a predictable country template.
Two songs also connect the new studio record to material fans had already encountered live: “Oneida” and “Nose on the Grindstone.” Pitchfork hears their studio versions as both recalling earlier work and showing how Childers’s music has evolved. That is the reviewer’s reading, not an official explanation of how the songs should be understood.
Pitchfork also interprets “Getting to the Bottom” in relation to Childers’s sobriety. That context is useful as a critical perspective, but the review’s interpretation should not be mistaken for a confirmed account of the song’s intended meaning.
Is Snipe Hunter Americana, country or rock?
There is no single definitive label established by the album’s coverage. Axios Nashville reported that Snipe Hunter reignited debate over what “Americana” means. The article relays rock critic Steven Hyden’s preference for “heartland rock” and draws on Americana Music Association executive director Jed Hilly for historical context.

Rank #3
Those competing descriptions reflect the record’s boundary-crossing character more than a settled classification. It contains country- and roots-associated storytelling alongside rockabilly, psychedelia, Southern rock and ragtime. Calling it simply one of those things can obscure the variety critics are responding to; “Americana” itself remains a contested umbrella rather than a precise answer.
