Its appeal was the abrupt switch from Linda Perry’s soaring rock vocal to Minaj’s rap section—a contrast that became the setup for quick lip-syncs and visual reveals.
What songs are in the mashup?
It combines two recordings: 4 Non Blondes’ 1992 hit “What’s Up?” and Nicki Minaj’s “Beez in the Trap.” The mashup alternates between Perry’s instantly recognizable high vocal and the beat and rap section of Minaj’s track, making the change in musical mood the central joke and cue.

Who made it, and when did it appear?
Rolling Stone credited the mashup to TikTok creator DJ Aux Lord and reported that he posted it in August 2025. The sound drew broader attention later that year. This is a 2025 trend story; the available reports do not establish whether the audio is still trending on TikTok in October 2026 or give a current usage total.
How did people use the sound?
Creators used the switch between songs to structure short videos: a lip-sync to Perry’s emphatic vocal would give way to Minaj’s rap as the video revealed a costume, announced a relationship, or played up the difference between friends’ personalities. The sudden tonal shift let a familiar song transition double as a punchline or reveal.

How big was the trend?
In its October 23, 2025 report, Rolling Stone attributed several streaming increases to Spotify. During the reported October period, global streams of “Beez in the Trap” were up 460 percent, while streams of “What’s Up?” were up 75 percent. Spotify also reported a 2,120 percent increase in Gen Z listeners discovering Minaj’s music through the song. These are historical figures reported by Rolling Stone, not current totals; the report material does not provide an independently documented measurement methodology.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that more than 695,000 social-media users had posted lip-sync videos by October 28, 2025. That dated count is not a live TikTok figure.
