Why Chrissy Teigen Left Twitter in 2021—and Returned Three Weeks Later

Chrissy Teigen’s March 2021 Twitter exit was a temporary break shaped by emotional strain and harassment in the background—not a permanent departure or a decision she attributed only to trolls.

Chrissy Teigen announced on March 24, 2021, that she was leaving Twitter, describing the platform as a source of more pain than positivity. Harassment and threats were part of the context, but she said the decision was personal—not simply a response to trolls or a claim that Twitter alone was to blame. The departure was temporary: she returned on April 16, after roughly three weeks.

What did Chrissy Teigen say when she left Twitter?

Teigen posted a series of farewell messages on the evening of March 24, 2021. Her account was gone by the following morning, according to contemporaneous coverage by The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times.

In words reproduced by The Washington Post, she wrote: “This no longer serves me as positively as it serves me negatively.” She also explained how strongly she felt the pressure to please people: “My life goal is to make people happy. The pain I feel when I don’t is too much for me.”

The comments were not a new concern. The Washington Post reported that in a February 2021 interview with Today, Teigen had said, “The comments affect me,” and “It’s hard to weed out.” Those remarks preceded the farewell thread; they were not part of it.

Was her departure because of trolls and harassment?

Harassment was part of the circumstances surrounding Teigen’s exit, but her own explanation was more nuanced than “the trolls made me quit.” In an Instagram post the morning after her farewell, she wrote: “It’s not the platform. It’s not the ‘bullying’. And it’s not the trolls. The trolls I can deal with, although it weighs on you.” She added: “It’s just me. I have to come to terms with the fact some people aren’t gonna like me.” The Los Angeles Times reproduced those comments.

That distinction matters: Teigen acknowledged that online abuse could weigh on her while describing the decision as a personal reckoning with criticism and her desire to be liked—not as a single-cause protest against Twitter.

The harassment reported at the time

The Guardian reported that Teigen had faced threats and harassment, including QAnon targeting of her and her husband, John Legend, and abuse after she publicly shared her pregnancy loss. The newspaper said that during the previous year she had blocked and unfollowed more than one million Twitter accounts while trying to fend off threats and false claims. That figure describes accounts blocked and unfollowed; it is not a count of confirmed harassers.

The Guardian also cautioned that it was unclear whether the QAnon campaign caused her March 2021 departure. The available contemporary reporting therefore supports harassment as context, but not a claim that one specific campaign was the proven or sole reason she left.

Why was she called Twitter’s “unofficial mayor”?

Teigen had a prominent, decade-long relationship with Twitter and was known for cooking posts, humor, cultural commentary and sharp replies. The Washington Post reported that she called herself the platform’s “unofficial mayor” in a 2019 Twitter video. The phrase was a playful description of her presence, not an official role.

Her departure came amid public criticism as well as abuse. The Washington Post noted criticism around a planned cleaning-products partnership; that criticism should not be conflated with harassment. At the time, the Post reported that she had more than 13.7 million Twitter followers. The Los Angeles Times reported more than 34 million Instagram followers the morning after she left. Both are historical figures from 2021, not current counts.

Did Chrissy Teigen come back to Twitter?

Yes. On April 16, 2021, about three weeks after leaving, Teigen resumed posting. The Los Angeles Times quoted her return message: “I choose to take the bad with the good!!” It also reported that she said the company had worked with her and her team for more than ten years. Her return makes clear that the March announcement was a break, not a permanent departure.
