In May 2023, Spanish creator Ibai Llanos announced that La Velada del Año III, his streamer boxing event on Twitch, would be broadcast in English for the first time. The announcement had three parts: official English commentators working from a booth at the venue, a free English stream, and an arrangement with Twitch to count English-stream viewers toward the official Spanish stream’s total. This article explains what was promised, what was reported before the event took place, and where the public record stops.
What Llanos announced
The announcement was reported by Gizmodo’s Jody Serrano on May 26, 2023. It was not an official Twitch announcement. Llanos spoke in Spanish, and Gizmodo supplied the English rendering, which reads:
“La Velada del Año will be broadcast in English. There are going to be official, top English commentators that are going to be commenting the event from a box at the Metropolitan [soccer stadium]. In addition, Twitch has found a way to count the viewers for the English stream towards the total for our official Spanish stream.”
Because this is the article’s translation rather than Llanos’s original wording, it should be cited as Gizmodo’s English rendering. The statement contains two distinct commitments. The first is a commentary team, which Llanos described as official and top-tier. The second is a counting arrangement, which would credit English viewers to the Spanish channel’s total. The report did not name the commentators or the English channel.

Twitch is the platform carrying the stream and, according to Llanos, the company agreed to the viewer-counting arrangement. Nothing in the report indicates that Twitch organized the boxing card, the venue, or the fights.

Last year’s audience figures
Gizmodo cited the previous year’s event as having peaked at 3.3 million simultaneous viewers and averaged 2.5 million viewers. Both figures are attributed to Streams Charts, a stream-analytics service, for 2022, as reported by Gizmodo in 2023. They are secondhand numbers, and this article has not checked them against the underlying Streams Charts data.
The report also quoted Nazar Babenko, identified as a product manager at Streams Charts, who described the attention and expectations that come with adding an English broadcast: “With great power comes great responsibility.” The quote reflects the analytics firm’s perspective on rising expectations, not a measured outcome.

What the announcement does not establish
The 2023 report stops before the event, so several questions remain open in the public record covered here:
- Who ultimately provided the English commentary.
- Which channel carried the English feed.
- Whether the viewer-counting arrangement worked the way Llanos described.
- The event’s final attendance and total viewership.
Treat the English-broadcast details as a statement of plans made in May 2023, not as a verified account of how the broadcast ran.

How to read the headline
The phrase “for the first time ever” reflects Llanos’s own framing as reported by Gizmodo. The “biggest event” description rests on the 2022 audience figures above, which come from one analytics firm and are relayed secondhand. The report does not rank this event against every other event on Twitch, so the headline’s superlative should be read as the article’s framing rather than an independently measured comparison.
