Bella Swan is 17 when Twilight begins and nearly 19 when she marries Edward Cullen in Breaking Dawn. Edward looks 17 but is more than a century old. Bella ultimately chooses Edward, while Jacob Black’s story shifts from loving Bella to imprinting on her daughter, Renesmee.
How old are Bella, Edward, and Jacob?
The four original novels—Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn—span different milestones for the characters. Bella’s age advances with the story, while Edward’s apparent age and time lived are different measures.

How Bella’s age and relationships change
Bella is 17 when she moves to Forks and meets Edward. New Moon opens on her eighteenth birthday. Near the end of Eclipse, she becomes engaged to Edward, and in Breaking Dawn they marry about a month before her nineteenth birthday. The wedding takes place while Bella is still human. Edward transforms her after she nearly dies giving birth to Renesmee.
Jacob is Bella’s friend and confidant, particularly while Edward is absent. He falls in love with her, and Bella cares for him, but she ultimately chooses Edward. Jacob’s later imprinting on Renesmee marks a new turn in his story; it does not make him Bella’s partner.

Why Edward is both 17 and over 100
Edward’s body remains that of a 17-year-old, the age at which he was changed into a vampire. His chronological age is more than a century. These descriptions refer to different things, so calling him simply “17” leaves out the time he has lived.
Stephenie Meyer, in correspondence reproduced by Twilight Lexicon, describes his perspective this way: “Edward is emotionally and intellectually more adult than a modern seventeen-year-old, due to the times in which he lived.” His outward age, elapsed years, and outlook should not be treated as interchangeable.

Reading the relationship arc across the four novels
Bella and Edward’s relationship moves from romance in Twilight to engagement in Eclipse and marriage in Breaking Dawn. Jacob’s feelings for Bella create a lasting romantic conflict, but Bella chooses Edward. By the end of the fourth novel, Bella and Edward have a daughter, and Jacob has imprinted on Renesmee.
The story’s source material is the four-book sequence: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn.
