Season 2, Episode 4 of Tulsa King, titled “Heroes and Villains,” is the hour in which Dwight Manfredi’s acquittal on bribery charges gives way to a push to expand his business. According to CBR’s review by Brittany Frederick, the episode also gives real weight to his sister Joanne and several crew members, and it builds to a major surprise involving Cal Thresher.
Spoiler warning: the review this article draws on is spoiler-heavy and describes violence. The Cal Thresher section below repeats only what the review itself says about that development.
What the episode is built around
- Episode: Season 2, Episode 4, “Heroes and Villains.”
- Starting point: Dwight’s acquittal on bribery charges, which the review treats as clearing the immediate legal problem.
- Main thread: Dwight expanding his business empire after the acquittal.
- Secondary threads: important moments for his sister Joanne and several members of his crew.
- Late turn: a surprise involving Cal Thresher, which the review calls major.
Dwight’s expansion after the acquittal
The episode’s central move is simple to state: with the bribery case behind him, Dwight turns his attention to growing his operation. The CBR review frames this as the point where the season’s drama shifts from court pressure to business strategy. That is a critic’s reading of the episode’s structure rather than a plot fact stated by the production, and it is the reading most worth testing against what you see on screen.
The review’s central question is whether this expansion feels earned. Because the acquittal removes the obstacle that would normally drive tension, the business plot has to generate its own stakes. Whether it does is a judgment call, and the review presents it as one.

Joanne and the crew
The review does not treat Joanne and the crew as side material. It describes their moments as important to the episode, and it frames their storylines as part of what gives the hour its ensemble weight. The review does not walk through individual scenes in detail, so readers should expect the character work to be discussed at the level of its function rather than its beat-by-beat sequence.
The Cal Thresher surprise
Spoiler section. The review identifies a major surprise tied to Cal Thresher and sees it as opening up further drama for the season. Beyond that framing, the source does not describe the development, and this article does not add detail it cannot support.

Does the twist move the season forward?
The review’s verdict rests on three questions, and they are the most useful way to judge the episode for yourself:
- Does Dwight’s business push feel earned? The acquittal removes the case pressure, so the expansion plot has to carry its own tension.
- Do Joanne and the crew deepen the ensemble? The review credits these threads with real content, not filler.
- Does the Cal Thresher surprise create momentum? The review says it opens further season drama, a claim you can check against the episodes that follow.
The review’s broader assessment is that this episode is one the season had been building toward. That is the critic’s characterization, not an official statement from the show’s producers or cast, and it is best read as one informed opinion among others.
