They are not standard records with predictable fidelity or a guaranteed playback life. Two widely reported examples—an artist’s experimental project and a separate 45 RPM disc—show why the format is best understood as edible sound art, not a uniform product.
What is a chocolate record?
It is a disc made from chocolate with grooves that can be played by a record player. The format joins a familiar mechanical recording medium with a material that is fragile, edible and sensitive to handling. The result can make sound, but playback quality and how long a disc remains playable vary; unpredictability can also be part of the artwork.
The reports describe separate projects, not one standard design. Their dimensions, format and making details should not be combined into a single specification.
Two projects, two different descriptions
Julia Drouhin’s Sweet Tribology
ABC News Australia reported in 2015 that French sound artist Julia Drouhin, based in Tasmania, made edible and playable records measuring 17 centimetres across for her Sweet Tribology project. Drouhin told ABC: “They can be played, listened to and eaten.” She said the sound remained unpredictable, which was part of her intention. ABC reported that she had spent three years refining the sound.

Those measurements and statements describe Drouhin’s project; they are not a general size or performance standard for chocolate records. ABC News Australia’s report on Drouhin’s chocolate records gives the project context.
The separate 45 RPM example
Hackaday’s December 14, 2020 article described another chocolate disc as one-sided, recorded at 45 RPM and roughly the size of a standard single. It called the disc about five times thicker than a typical phonograph record. These are that article’s details for its example, not specifications shared by Drouhin’s records or every chocolate disc.

Hackaday relayed advice from the Techmoan video associated with the example: use the lightest stylus tracking force possible. That is a caution about playing a delicate object, not confirmation that any particular turntable, cartridge or stylus is compatible. Hackaday’s December 14, 2020 article describes the disc and the historical custom-chocolate offer.
How Drouhin’s records were made
ABC reported that Drouhin used silicone moulds and poured chocolate into them, with temperature handling intended to prevent the chocolate from melting or warping. The report said making a mould took two to four hours and described almost 24 hours of work involving melting, freezing, demoulding and preserving the chocolate at room temperature.

These are reported details of an individual art process, not a validated recipe, food-safety procedure or set of instructions for making a playable record. ABC also reported Drouhin’s observation that nut inclusions could hurt sound quality because the needle encountered bumps; that observation should not be treated as universal manufacturing or food guidance.
What to expect when playing one
- Sound: Do not expect the consistency of a conventional vinyl pressing. Drouhin specifically valued unpredictable sound, and the reports do not establish a common fidelity level.
- Playback life: The disc is also food, and the reports do not promise a particular number of plays or a shelf life.
- Equipment: The light-tracking-force advice reported by Hackaday is a precaution, not a compatibility list. No specific turntable or stylus is established as suitable.
- Handling: The reported process involved managing temperature to limit melting and warping. The sources do not provide universal storage or handling specifications.
Can you buy a chocolate record now?
Current seller availability, shipping regions and Amazon listings are not verified by the cited reports. Hackaday described a UK chocolatier that had offered custom labels and a choice of two songs, but the Etsy listing linked in the article now returns 404. That offer is historical, not a confirmed way to place an order today. ABC’s coverage of Drouhin documents an art project, not a current retail service.

If you are searching, “chocolate record” is a useful phrase, but treat any result as an unverified listing until the seller confirms that it is active, accepts orders and ships to your location. Ask whether a song or label can be customized, what playback format and size the record uses, and what the seller says about sound quality and durability. The two reported projects do not establish standard answers to those questions.
