Tryst With Destiny is most compelling when its actors give life to sharply different people navigating the same unequal world. That ensemble is the strongest reason to watch; the writing and episode-to-episode consistency are less reliable. The result is an ambitious anthology that has drawn sharply divided reviews rather than a universally successful showcase.
What is Tryst With Destiny?
Directed by Prashant Nair, Tryst With Destiny has appeared in two forms: as a feature-length anthology and as a four-part limited series on SonyLIV. Drishyam Films describes the 2020 production as a 96-minute drama in Hindi, English, Marathi and Telugu. Scroll reports that the project began as a feature, was presented as a triptych at Tribeca in 2020 and won best screenplay there, before later emerging as a four-story series. These are different presentations of the project, not interchangeable episode counts.
The series’ episodes are “Fair and Fine,” “The River,” “One BHK” and “A Beast Within.” They tell distinct stories connected by a shared timeline and, as Scroll notes, by news and mass media. Across the anthology, the concerns include social inequality—among it colorism and caste—as well as greed and revenge.
How strong are the performances?
The ensemble is the series’ clearest asset. Nandini Ramnath’s review for Scroll identifies the cast as the main draw and praises the actors’ investment in their characters, even as she finds the plotting and writing weaker. The cast includes Vineet Kumar Singh, Jaideep Ahlawat, Ashish Vidyarthi, Suhasini Maniratnam, Palomi Ghosh and Kani Kusruti; coverage also names Amit Sial, Geetanjali Thapa, Lillete Dubey and Victor Banerjee.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Rather than depending on one central performance, the anthology asks its actors to carry separate dramatic worlds. That makes the format a useful showcase for the range of the ensemble, but it also means the impact can vary with the story: strong acting does not automatically make every plot equally persuasive.
What do the reviews disagree about?
The disagreement is less about whether the series has serious themes than about how successfully it dramatizes them. Ramnath’s Scroll review emphasizes the performances while criticizing the writing. Cinema Express was more negative, rating the anthology 2/5 and describing it as uneven and heavy-handed. The Times of India was more favorable, rating it 3.5/5 and arguing that it captures socio-economic inequality without preaching.

Those are individual critical judgments, not audience consensus. They point to the choice a viewer faces: the show’s thematic ambition and cast may outweigh its unevenness, but viewers looking for consistently subtle plotting may find the execution frustrating.
Is Tryst With Destiny worth watching?
It is worth considering if you enjoy actor-led anthologies and stories that connect individual lives to caste, colorism and economic inequality. The shared social landscape gives the episodes a larger frame, while their separate plots offer different dramatic situations. Go in with measured expectations about the writing: critics have praised the performers more consistently than the storytelling, and the anthology’s effectiveness is not uniform.
