What happened with the image of Trump as Jesus?
The reported sequence matters: Trump’s personal Truth Social account shared the image after his criticism of Pope Leo XIV, and the image was removed the following day. The Washington Post described the image as presenting Trump in a saintly, perhaps Jesus-like manner and reported the backlash. Its interpretation of the image is commentary; the posting, reaction and removal are the reported events. The Washington Post’s account documents a conspicuous controversy, not a representative measure of how Americans view Trump.
How common are Trump’s AI posts?
They appear to be a recurring form of political communication, though available counts cover specific periods and rely on publishers’ own methods rather than a definitive official archive.
PolitiFact’s review
PolitiFact identified 36 Truth Social posts using AI from Trump’s inauguration through its October 2025 analysis. It classified 21 as promoting or sensationalizing Trump or his administration, 12 as degrading opponents and three as reinforcing issue messaging. Those are PolitiFact’s classifications of the posts it reviewed, not a complete count of every post. PolitiFact’s analysis also notes that some items were reposts and that their creators were not always clear.

The Irish Times’ 2026 count
The Irish Times reported that Trump made more than 2,700 Truth Social posts in 2026—more than 19 a day—and that at least 75 appeared AI-generated under its conservative identification method. It counted 57 in the first three weeks of May, compared with eight in all of April. These are figures from the newspaper’s 2026 analysis, not a lifetime total or a measure of public reaction. What kinds of images have drawn criticism?
The examples differ in target and tone: some flatter Trump, while others demean political opponents. They should not be collapsed into one claim about a single image or account.

Self-aggrandizing imagery
The April 2026 saintly image was posted on Trump’s personal Truth Social account and was removed after the reported backlash. Its religious overtones made the reaction particularly visible, but the episode does not establish how many people objected or whether their views of Trump changed.
Imagery aimed at opponents
A Guardian retrospective described White House imagery showing Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer wearing sombreros and holding tacos. The paper also reported that a related earlier deepfake video was condemned as offensive and racist, including by Jeffries, and that similar imagery continued. This is an example involving White House imagery, not proof that Trump personally created or posted each item. The Guardian’s retrospective describes the imagery and criticism.

Why can AI imagery create reputational and trust risks?
Experts describe two related but distinct risks: realistic manipulated media can harm the people depicted, and altered imagery shared through credible channels can make it harder for the public to trust what it sees.
Risk to people depicted
Katherine Ognyanova, an associate professor of communication at Rutgers University, told PolitiFact: “Specific deepfakes can do reputational harm to the people they represent.” She also noted that realistic deepfakes can be difficult to distinguish from reality and take substantial effort to debunk. That is a general explanation of how reputational harm can occur; it is not a measurement of damage to Trump’s own standing. PolitiFact’s discussion with Ognyanova addresses the risk.

Risk to trust in official information
The Associated Press reported that misinformation experts worry AI-generated or edited images can erode perceptions of truth and sow distrust. Michael A. Spikes, a Northwestern University professor and news media literacy researcher, said altered imagery from credible sources “crystallizes an idea of what’s happening, instead of showing what is actually happening.” This concern is about public trust and official communications, not a finding that Trump’s personal approval has fallen. The AP report discusses that concern.

Account attribution matters. Trump’s personal Truth Social account, the White House’s official X account and other administration accounts are different sources; an official account’s post is not automatically a post authored by Trump.

- PolitiFact says some Truth Social items in its review were reposts and that creators were sometimes unclear.
- The Irish Times reported uncertainty about how much of Trump’s feed is written or posted by Trump, his team, or both.
- For White House or agency posts, the account establishes which institution published the material, but does not by itself establish who created the image or directed its publication.
The White House’s stated rationale, as reported by The Irish Times, is that Truth Social lets Trump “communicates directly and authentically with the American people and the world.” That is the administration’s characterization, not independent evidence about authorship, authenticity or audience effects. The Irish Times reports the White House’s position.
Does the evidence show “massive” damage to Trump’s image?
It shows recurring AI use, documented criticism in particular cases, and plausible mechanisms for reputational and trust harm. It does not establish the scale or net direction of any change in Trump’s overall public image. The reported counts measure posts, not attitudes; backlash around one image cannot stand in for the views of the public as a whole.
To support a claim of massive damage, evidence would need to connect exposure to a reliable change in attitudes—for example, longitudinal polling that tracks views over time and accounts for exposure, or a credible causal study separating the effect of AI posts from other events. The reporting cited here does not provide such a measurement.
