CNN reported on August 10, 2025 that President Donald Trump directed staff to move Barack Obama’s official portrait from public display to the top of the Grand Staircase, the restricted passage that leads to the White House residence. CNN said the portraits of George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush were in the same staircase area. The account rests on two unnamed sources familiar with the move. No public order, on-the-record explanation, or motive has been established in the reporting we reviewed, and the most recent location report we found is dated August 2025.
Where the portraits were reported to be
The report describes a relocation inside the building, not removal from it. CNN’s account, carried by KESQ, places the three portraits in the staircase area that visitors on public White House tours cannot see. Rolling Stone Australia/New Zealand summarized CNN’s reporting on August 11, 2025, and its summary adds nothing beyond the original account.
The wording matters for accuracy. “Hidden” implies something more than the reporting supports. The sources describe a move to a restricted area, not destruction, storage off-site, or a bar on access for all staff.
How the portraits reached the staircase
The staircase move is the latest step in a sequence that began with the 2022 unveiling. The table below sets out each documented location and what the sources say about visibility.

The 2022 placement
The White House Historical Association documents the September 7, 2022 unveiling of the official portraits of Barack and Michelle Obama. It identifies Robert McCurdy as the painter of Barack Obama’s portrait and says it was hung in the Entrance Hall after the ceremony.
The April 2025 foyer change
On April 11, 2025, the Associated Press reported that a painting of Trump depicting the aftermath of the 2024 assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, had been installed in the Grand Foyer. To make room, Obama’s portrait was moved to the opposite wall, which had held the George W. Bush portrait. AP reported that the White House post announcing the new painting used the caption “Some new artwork at the White House.”
That caption belongs to the April announcement. It does not explain the later staircase move, and it should not be read as one.
The August 2025 staircase report
CNN’s account is the only reporting we found on the staircase move. It attributes the direction to two sources familiar with the matter rather than to a public order or a named official. Because the account is anonymous, treat the placement as reported, not as confirmed by an official statement.

The White House Historical Association says it has acquired and commissioned official portraits of presidents and first ladies since 1965. That makes portrait display an established institutional practice, and it explains why changes in placement are newsworthy.
The reporting reviewed does not show a law or binding rule requiring a president to display predecessors’ portraits in a particular room. Where a portrait hangs is a matter of custom and presidential discretion, not a documented requirement.

What remains unknown
- Motive. No explanation for the staircase move has been established in the reporting reviewed, including the April 2025 caption.
- Current location. The most recent reporting on the staircase placement is from August 2025. We have found no newer confirmation of where the portraits are displayed as of October 2026.
- Official confirmation. The staircase details rest on anonymous sourcing. The reporting reviewed does not include an on-the-record statement from the White House describing the move.
- Bush portrait details. The reporting does not establish when or how the George H.W. Bush portrait moved, or whether it was displaced in April 2025.
Until newer reporting or an official update surfaces, the accurate description is that CNN reported, citing two sources familiar with the move, that Obama’s portrait and both Bush portraits had been moved to the Grand Staircase in August 2025.
