In July 2025, the White House physician reported that Trump had undergone venous Doppler ultrasounds and an echocardiogram after noticing mild swelling in his lower legs. The memorandum describes these as a medical evaluation, not an emergency, and it reports chronic venous insufficiency with normal cardiac structure and function. The “emergency” label in the headline does not come from the physician’s account.
What the July 2025 evaluation involved
The disclosure came in a memorandum dated July 17, 2025, from Sean P. Barbabella, D.O., Physician to the President, Captain, U.S. Navy. According to the memo, Trump had noticed mild swelling in his lower legs in the preceding weeks, and the White House Medical Unit evaluated him. The full text is available through the American Presidency Project archive.
Bilateral lower-extremity venous Doppler ultrasounds
Ultrasound of the veins in both legs was used to look for clots and to assess blood flow. The memo reports that these studies found chronic venous insufficiency, a long-term condition in which the veins of the legs have difficulty returning blood to the heart. The memo states there was no evidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or arterial disease.
Laboratory testing
Blood work included a complete blood count, a comprehensive metabolic panel, a coagulation profile, D-dimer, B-type natriuretic peptide, and cardiac biomarkers. The memo describes all of these as within normal limits. It also says no signs of heart failure, renal impairment, or systemic illness were identified.

Echocardiogram
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart that shows its structure and how well it pumps. The memo’s wording is direct: “An echocardiogram was also performed and confirmed normal cardiac structure and function.” This is the only heart-specific test named in the July evaluation, and it is the basis for the statement that the heart tests were normal.
Why the “emergency” framing does not hold
The July memorandum does not use the word emergency or describe a sudden event. It frames the visit as a follow-up to a symptom the patient had noticed over several weeks, with a set of standard tests to rule out the most serious causes of leg swelling. Calling it an emergency heart test overstates what the record shows. A more accurate description is a non-emergency medical evaluation of leg swelling that included a heart ultrasound.

Three separate medical events in 2025 and 2026
Coverage of Trump’s health has sometimes combined different visits. The table below separates the July swelling evaluation from the later imaging and the annual exam, each with its own purpose and source.
| Event | Date | Stated purpose | Main findings as reported | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Swelling evaluation | Memo dated July 17, 2025 | Mild lower-leg swelling noticed over recent weeks | Chronic venous insufficiency; no DVT or arterial disease; normal labs; echocardiogram showed normal cardiac structure and function | American Presidency Project memo, July 17, 2025 |
| Advanced imaging | October 2025 Walter Reed visit | Described by the White House physician as preventive screening | Trump later said it was a CT scan of his heart and abdomen; the findings are not part of the July memo | Associated Press, January 1, 2026 |
| Annual medical examination | Exam on May 26, 2026; memo dated May 29, 2026 | Routine annual exam at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center | Slight lower-leg swelling, improved from the prior year; cancer screenings, cardiovascular risk assessment, and metabolic evaluations reported as current; a 3D heart scan showed no abnormalities, according to ABC News reporting on the memo | ABC News, May 2026 |
October 2025 preventive imaging
Associated Press reported that the October 2025 advanced imaging was described by the White House physician as preventive screening. Trump later disclosed in an interview that it was a CT scan of his heart and abdomen. This imaging happened months after the July evaluation and was not ordered as a follow-up to the leg swelling, so it should not be read as part of that workup.

May 2026 annual examination
The May 2026 memo, covering an annual exam on May 26 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, describes slight lower-leg swelling that had improved from the previous year. It says routine cancer screenings, cardiovascular risk assessment, and metabolic evaluations were current and within recommended intervals. ABC News reported that the memo said a 3D heart scan showed no abnormalities and quoted preventive advice on diet, low-dose aspirin, physical activity, and continued weight loss.

- The clinical findings for July 2025 come from the physician’s memorandum. Neither the public nor reporters have independent access to the test results or medical records, so the findings are the physician’s account.
- The record gives individual results for one patient. It does not support broader claims about heart disease risk, prognosis, or what the swelling means beyond the diagnosis the physician stated.
- The memos do not describe undisclosed symptoms. Any claim of additional symptoms would need a separate, attributable source.
- Keep the three events in their own chronology. The October CT scan and the May exam cannot explain or confirm the July findings.
