Ram Mohan helped build Indian animation across more than five decades—as a Films Division animator, studio founder, filmmaker and mentor. Often called the “father of Indian animation,” he was one of the field’s foundational practitioners, not its sole founder: Indian animation’s institutional history also includes the Cartoon Films Unit, established in 1955, and artists such as Clair Weeks and Dadasaheb Phalke.

Who was Ram Mohan?

Ram Mohan was an Indian animator, director and studio leader whose career linked the country’s early organized animation work to independent production, socially purposeful films and later generations of artists. He studied chemistry before joining the Cartoon Film Unit at Films Division in 1956. According to animator Chetan Sharma’s tribute, the unit was trained by Disney animator Clair Weeks.

The honorific “father of Indian animation” captures Mohan’s stature and influence, but it should not be read as a claim that he alone created the field. In an earlier interview, Sharma recalls, Mohan said: “I think Dadasaheb Phalke should be considered the father of Indian animation.” That distinction reflects a history shaped by multiple practitioners and institutions. The Press Information Bureau’s 2023 account of Indian animation traces the institutional beginnings to the Cartoon Films Unit in 1955 and names other contributors.

How did his career develop?

Films Division: learning and making

At Films Division, Mohan worked within an organized animation unit at a time when the medium was still taking shape in India. His early work connected him to the institutional foundations of animation production and to colleagues whose efforts helped establish the field.

Prasad Productions and an independent studio

In 1968, Mohan left Films Division for the animation division of Prasad Productions. In 1972, he established Ram Mohan Biographics with collaborators S. G. Naik-Satam and M. R. Parulekar. The move from a government film unit to a private studio broadened the settings in which he could work, including advertising and commercial production.

His practice was not confined to one job title or format. He worked on scripts, designs and animation, directed short films, and created sequences and titles for feature films. The range of work is one reason his career is better understood as a sustained contribution to an industry than as a list of director credits.

Which films and projects are associated with him?

Sharma’s tribute names short films including Banyan Deer, HomoSaps, Chaos, You Said It!, Fire Games, Taru and The White Elephant. The list illustrates the variety of his work, but it is not a complete filmography, and the cited sources do not establish current viewing availability for these titles.

Meena and animation with a social purpose

The Press Information Bureau highlights Mohan’s contribution to Meena, a UNICEF-backed animated project that addressed social issues including gender equality. It showed how animation could carry public-interest messages as well as entertain.

Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama

Mohan co-directed Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama with Koichi Sasaki. The project also places his career in an international context: his work connected Indian animation practice with collaborators beyond India.

How did Ram Mohan influence other animators?

Mohan’s influence extended beyond the films he made. Sharma recounts joining a training program at Mohan’s studio in 1994, describing a direct link between the studio’s work and the development of newer practitioners. That kind of mentorship matters in a field where craft is passed on through shared working methods as well as finished films.

A project at the Industrial Design Centre (IDC), IIT Bombay, catalogued and collected Mohan’s work between 2002 and 2004. IDC’s project record explains the value of preserving his methods and design vision for students. The archive makes his contribution legible not only as output, but also as knowledge that could inform future designers.

Why does his career matter in the wider history of Indian animation?

Mohan’s career crossed several important parts of the field: the early institutional studio system, private and commercial production, socially oriented projects, international collaboration, and the training of new artists. It is a useful way to see how Indian animation developed through both institutions and individual practitioners.

It is also important to keep the scale of the claim clear. Mohan was a foundational figure, but his story belongs alongside those of Clair Weeks, Dadasaheb Phalke, Bhimsain, V. G. Samant, his studio partners and the wider community of artists. The Press Information Bureau’s 2023 account offers a broader institutional frame, while Sharma’s tribute provides a close account of Mohan’s career and influence.
