On January 15, 2025, President-elect Donald Trump named Jon Voight, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone as “special ambassadors” or “special envoys” to Hollywood. He said they would be his “eyes and ears” and that he would act on their suggestions, with the aim of bringing film and television production back to Hollywood. But contemporaneous reports described no defined duties, appointment mechanism, or plan for achieving that goal.
What was the point of naming the three actors?
Trump presented the trio as a channel for advice about Hollywood and the entertainment industry. In a post on Truth Social, he said: “These three very talented people will be my eyes and ears, and I will get done what they suggest.” The stated ambition was to help bring production back and make Hollywood stronger.
That describes an aspiration, not a specific policy. The announcement did not explain what the actors would do, how they would gather or deliver advice, or how their suggestions would translate into changes affecting production. The Associated Press and Los Angeles Times both reported that the role’s details were unclear.
Were they given official government jobs?
The January 2025 coverage described Trump’s announcement of special ambassadors or envoys, but did not establish that the three received formal diplomatic appointments or defined government offices. The title should not be read as evidence of diplomatic status, government authority, or an industry-wide mandate. The reports also did not establish the role’s current status or document what the three did after the announcement.

How did the actors respond?
Mel Gibson said he was surprised
Gibson said he learned of the announcement at the same time as the public. In a statement reported by the Associated Press, he said: “I got the news at the same time as all of you and was just as surprised. Nevertheless, I heed the call. My duty as a citizen is to give any help and insight I can.” He also joked, “Any chance the position comes with an Ambassador’s residence?”
Responses from Voight and Stallone were not established
The Associated Press reported that Stallone’s representatives did not immediately respond to its request for comment. The contemporaneous reporting cited here did not establish a substantive response from Voight, so Gibson’s reaction should not be treated as a statement on behalf of all three.

Why did the announcement come at a difficult moment for Hollywood?
The announcement followed years of disruption to film and television production, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 guild strikes. In January 2025, Los Angeles-area wildfires added another shock to an industry already concerned about where productions were being made.
News coverage also cited several different measures of industry performance. They describe different things and should not be treated as interchangeable—or as current 2026 figures:

California Governor Gavin Newsom had proposed expanding the state’s Film and Television Tax Credit program to $750 million annually, up from $330 million, according to the Associated Press’s January 2025 report. That was a state proposal, not evidence that the three actors had authority over tax incentives or that their announcement implemented a production policy.

The reports noted that the selections came in a political context: Voight was described as a longtime Trump supporter, while Stallone had introduced Trump at a November 2024 gala and called him “the second George Washington.” Those details help explain the selections, but they do not show that the actors were chosen by Hollywood organizations or authorized to speak for the industry as a whole.
