On May 19, 2025, President Donald Trump said he would call for a “major investigation” into celebrities who supported Kamala Harris’s 2024 presidential campaign, including Bruce Springsteen. Trump alleged that Harris’s campaign disguised payments for endorsements as entertainment expenses. The reports available at the time did not establish that Springsteen was paid for an endorsement, and the White House and Justice Department had not confirmed that a formal investigation was underway.
What did Trump say about Bruce Springsteen?
In a May 19 Truth Social post, Trump said, “I am going to call for a major investigation into this matter.” He questioned how much Harris had paid Springsteen and asserted that candidates could not pay for endorsements. TheWrap reported that Trump offered no evidence that Springsteen had been paid for an endorsement. TheWrap’s May 19 report reproduced the post and described Trump’s claim that payments had been disguised as entertainment spending.

Trump named other celebrities who supported Harris, including Beyoncé, Oprah Winfrey and Bono. His statement was an allegation and an announced intention to call for an investigation—not a finding by an agency or court.
Why did Trump bring up Springsteen?
The post followed Springsteen’s remarks at a concert in Manchester, England, the previous week. Springsteen criticized Trump’s administration, saying: “In my home, the America I love, the America I’ve written about, that has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous administration.” ABC7 reported that Springsteen also urged people who believe in democracy to speak against authoritarianism. ABC7’s May 19 report says Trump later called Springsteen “overrated” and said he should not speak about America until he returned to the country.

Was Springsteen paid for a campaign endorsement?
The reports cited here do not establish that Springsteen received payment for an endorsement. Trump alleged that Harris’s campaign paid celebrities for support while recording the spending as entertainment expenses, but TheWrap said he provided no evidence for the claim about Springsteen. The reviewed coverage also reports no court or agency finding on this specific allegation. TheWrap’s account and ABC7’s report describe what Trump said; they do not verify the alleged payment.

No formal investigation was confirmed in the contemporaneous reporting. On May 20, NY1/Spectrum News reported that the White House and Justice Department had not confirmed whether investigations were being pursued. NY1/Spectrum News’s May 20 report covered Trump’s calls for investigations into Harris and others. That reporting establishes the lack of confirmation at that time; it does not establish whether an agency later opened an investigation.
