Reporting from the time says 15 people were killed. Their messages, as reported by PerthNow on 15 December 2025, expressed grief for the victims and their families, solidarity with Australia’s Jewish community, and remembrance. Cummins also asked people to donate blood.

Oprah Winfrey
Winfrey’s tribute was more personal. PerthNow reports that she recalled visiting Bondi days before the attack and expressed sorrow for the victims, their families and loved ones, and Australians more broadly. Her reported words were:
“I just spent the last 2 weeks in Australia, walking Bondi just days ago feeling the openness and ease that lives there.”

The attack took place on Sunday, 14 December 2025, during a Chanukah gathering at Bondi Beach. Both PerthNow and ABC News report that 15 people were killed. PerthNow describes the attack as taking place on Sunday night. ABC News, whose victim-focused account was published on 16 December 2025 and updated on 21 January 2026, dates it to 14 December. Both accounts describe the same event.

The tributes were therefore responses to an event that had occurred the day before PerthNow’s report. Most of the messages in the report were framed around the victims, the families affected, and the Jewish community in Sydney and across Australia.
Government and institutional responses
Several official responses followed in the days after the attack.
- NRL statement (18 December 2025). The National Rugby League’s official statement offered condolences to the families of the victims and to the Jewish community. It also commended the first responders and community members who helped.
- Day of Reflection (announced 19 December 2025). The federal and New South Wales governments announced a Day of Reflection for Sunday, 21 December 2025. The announcement said both governments would work with the Jewish community on a National Day of Mourning in the new year.
- Candle-lighting at 6:47 pm. The NSW Government invited people across the country to light a candle at 6:47 pm, one week after the attack, as a quiet act of remembrance with family, friends or loved ones. The time falls on the day of the Day of Reflection.
The NSW release’s wording on the candle-lighting is:
“We invite people across the country to light a candle at 6:47pm, one week since the attack unfolded, as a quiet act of remembrance with family, friends or loved ones.”

How to read these tributes
The celebrity messages describe grief and solidarity, and they are useful for seeing how public figures responded. They are not a full record of public reaction. The names listed are the ones in PerthNow’s report, and this article does not suggest they represent everyone who responded.
The official material and the NRL statement come from primary government and organisational releases. The celebrity quotations come from one news report, so the most reliable way to confirm any wording is to check the original post on the person’s verified account. This account reflects coverage from December 2025 and January 2026. Later memorial events and any revised reporting are outside its scope.
