Lawmakers from both parties condemned or criticized the post.

The next day, Trump posted on Truth Social that the deaths were “reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.” The wording and implication were Trump’s; the post did not establish why the Reiners died. CBS News and KPBS/NPR reproduced the post.
Reiner was a longtime critic of Trump and a filmmaker known for movies including The Princess Bride and A Few Good Men, as ABC News noted. His political criticism is context for the controversy, not evidence about the motive for the deaths.

What was known about a possible motive
At the time of the December 15 reports, CBS said no evidence had been made public connecting Reiner’s death to his political views. The Associated Press characterized Trump’s attribution to Reiner’s politics as made without evidence. Those statements describe what was publicly available during the immediate news cycle; they are not a finding about any later investigation or court proceeding.
The reports in this account cover the initial response and early investigative reporting. They do not establish the eventual investigative or legal outcome.

Trump defended the post rather than apologizing
When asked whether he stood by the post, Trump said Reiner “was a deranged person as far as Trump is concerned.” He also said he was “not a fan” of Reiner and thought Reiner was “very bad for our country,” according to the Associated Press. CBS reported that Trump did not apologize.
Lawmakers criticized the remarks across party lines
Responses reported on December 15 included Republican and Democratic lawmakers. Their statements show criticism from members of both parties, not a measured consensus among all lawmakers.

- Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky called the post “inappropriate and disrespectful,” saying it was about a man who had just been brutally murdered, according to CBS News.
- Republican Rep. Mike Lawler of New York said the statement was wrong and called for sympathy and compassion, according to the Associated Press.
- Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla described Trump’s tirade as “disgusting and deranged,” CBS reported.
- Democratic Rep. Glenn Ivey said the remarks suggested the killings occurred because the Reiners criticized the administration, according to the ABC News report.
- Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia said, “This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies,” in a statement reported by KPBS/NPR.
Why the post drew backlash
Trump’s post tied a still-unexplained death to Reiner’s political opposition to him, and Trump’s follow-up remarks reinforced that framing instead of retracting it. The central distinction is that the political link was Trump’s claim; the contemporaneous reporting said it was unsupported by publicly available evidence. Lawmakers’ objections focused on the timing and tone of the post as well as the suggestion that Reiner’s politics explained the violence.
