The True Story Behind The Terminator’s Laser-Sighted .45 Pistol

The Terminator’s AMT Hardballer Longslide carried a working HeNe laser in one prop version—but its cable led to an external power supply.

The Terminator’s laser-sighted .45 was an AMT Hardballer Longslide adapted by laser designer Ed Reynolds—but its working beam was not powered by a self-contained sight. Reynolds recalled an early helium-neon laser that needed a cable to an external power supply, with Arnold Schwarzenegger switching it on from inside his coat.

What pistol did the Terminator carry?

The base gun was an AMT Hardballer Longslide. Reynolds recalled that a prop house asked him to build a device for an “AMT Longslide, Hardballer.” The Internet Movie Firearms Database also identifies the screen pistol as an AMT Hardballer .45 Longslide. That specialist reference corroborates the identification, though it is not a production document. The film-firearms reference describes the weapon and its scene.

The model name and the film’s dialogue are separate things: the pistol was the AMT Longslide, while the clerk in the gun-shop scene describes the fictional sight’s operation. The line transcribed by the reference is: “Just touch the trigger – the beam comes on, and you point the red dot at where you want the bullet to go. You can’t miss.” That is dialogue, not a real-world guarantee of accuracy.

How Ed Reynolds built the laser prop

Reynolds had already designed laser-sighted firearms, including a system for a Colt Trooper dating to 1978. For the film prop, he recalled using an early helium-neon (HeNe) laser. In Ben Kuchera’s 2010 Ars Technica interview, Reynolds put its power demands at about 10,000 volts to start and 1,000 volts to keep running. Those are his approximate recollections, not independently measured specifications for a modern laser sight. Read the Ars Technica interview with Reynolds.

The production did not pay for a custom power supply, according to Reynolds. The working gun therefore had a cable leading to an external supply, and Schwarzenegger reached into his coat pocket with his other hand to flip the switch. The beam seen on screen depended on that off-weapon equipment and the actor’s operation; it was not a ready-to-use, self-contained sight.

Why there were two pistols

Reynolds described two versions made for production. Their distinction was practical, not just cosmetic:

Soldier Systems Daily’s retrospective also describes the AMT base pistol, Reynolds’s adaptation, the high-voltage HeNe setup, and the two prop versions. It is useful corroboration, while Reynolds’s interview remains the firsthand account. Soldier Systems Daily’s retrospective.

What Reynolds said he received

Reynolds recalled that the production wanted the work for free: “These people came to us, and they wanted this for free.” He said he personally received “a t-shirt, a sweatshirt, a baseball cap, and a poster,” and that the company received a small end-credit. These details are his recollection, not a separately verified contract or compensation record.

Reynolds worked at Laser Products, which later accounts identify as SureFire. The episode is a small but telling piece of prop history: an iconic on-screen laser effect rested on a real, power-hungry device, a cable, hidden equipment, and an actor-operated switch.
