“Expo,” the 47-minute premiere of Trigger Point Series 2, gets Lana Washington back into danger almost as soon as she returns from secondment. The setup delivers brisk, high-tension thriller viewing, but the episode’s grip depends most on Vicky McClure: she gives Lana enough force and vulnerability to keep the story engaging when its peril feels engineered rather than earned.
What happens in “Expo”
ITVX identifies “Expo” as Series 2, Episode 1. Lana Washington has returned from secondment and is giving a routine talk when an explosion rocks the city. The immediate question is whether she is ready to return to active duty. That premise brings the series’ central character back to the work quickly, while making her readiness part of the tension rather than a settled fact. ITVX’s episode listing gives the running time as 47 minutes.
Does the premiere earn its suspense?
The episode moves with the urgent, high-volume energy expected of a heightened thriller. Its danger arrives early, and the action is designed to keep the pressure on Lana. But suspense and plausibility do not always travel together here: some peril feels sustained by the need to keep the plot moving, not by choices that make the situation feel inevitable.
Rebecca Nicholson’s 28 January 2024 review for The Guardian describes the series as unsubtle, chaotic and implausible, yet gripping. Her sharpest point is the tension built into Lana herself: the show needs viewers to believe she is highly capable at dangerous work, while also having her make mistakes or ignore instructions to keep scenes suspenseful. “Expo” makes that balancing act central. Lana’s risky decisions create momentum, but they can also strain credibility when the episode asks viewers to accept both her expertise and her carelessness at once. Read Nicholson’s review.

The Standard’s search-result listing described the premiere as a “promisingly nailbiting start” and noted that McClure remained the character audiences cared about by the episode’s end. That is a limited signal rather than a full critical argument, but it aligns with the premiere’s clearest strength: even when the plotting is conspicuously heightened, Lana remains a reason to stay with it. The Standard’s listing.
Vicky McClure is the episode’s anchor
McClure makes Lana’s return feel consequential. She gives the character resolve without making her seem invulnerable, which helps the episode’s central contradiction—expertise under pressure, alongside fallibility—play as a character problem as well as a suspense device. When the plot leans on familiar thriller machinery, McClure supplies the continuity and emotional focus that hold the hour together.

ITV’s Series 2 press pack names McClure as the lead, playing police bomb-disposal officer Lana “Wash” Washington. Returning cast members include Nabil Elouahabi as Hass, Eric Shango as Danny, Mark Stanley as DCI Thom Youngblood, Kerry Godliman as Sonya Reeves, Kris Hitchen as John and Kevin Eldon as Jeff. New additions include Natalie Simpson as DS Helen Morgan, Julian Ovenden as Commander John Francis and Tomiwa Edun as Alex. The six-part series was created by Daniel Brierley and written by Simon Ashdown, Amanda Duke and Brierley. See ITV’s Series 2 press pack.
A later ITV Series 3 press-pack interview has executive producer Jed Mercurio saying, “The first priority is always characters, particularly Lana.” That remark concerns the creative priority across the show, not this premiere specifically; it nevertheless makes sense of why McClure’s performance is so important to “Expo.”

Who should watch—and what to know first
“Expo” is a good fit for viewers who want a fast-moving, tense opening and are willing to accept a deliberately heightened thriller rather than demand airtight plausibility. Those who need every dangerous choice to feel carefully justified may find the episode’s suspense mechanics frustrating. This is a review of the opening episode, not a verdict on all six parts of Series 2.
- Content advisories: ITV’s listing warns of graphic scenes of injury and death, high tension and frequent strong language.
- Where to watch: ITV lists the episode on ITVX. Availability can vary by location and may change over time.
ITV’s 2025 Series 3 press pack reports that Series 2 averaged 8.1 million viewers in 2024 and generated 30 million ITVX streams that year. These are season-wide figures, not audience or stream counts for “Expo.” See ITV’s Series 3 press pack.
