He had recently worked in WCW and thought its operation was chaotic; McMahon promised there would be an opportunity for him in WWE after a period of punishment. Triple H says he trusted that promise.
Why didn’t Triple H go to WCW with Scott Hall and Kevin Nash?
Triple H’s explanation, given years later in an interview with Flagrant and reported by The Sportster, was that he did not want to return to the WCW he remembered. He described the organization bluntly: “They didn’t have a clue what they were doing there. It was literally the inmates running the asylum.” That is Triple H’s assessment, not an independent comparison of the two companies.
He also believed he had a future in WWE. Triple H said he was willing to accept discipline for breaking the company’s presentation rules if McMahon could assure him that an opportunity would come later. McMahon told him there was one, and Triple H says he trusted him.
What happened at the Curtain Call?
On May 19, 1996, Shawn Michaels defeated Kevin Nash in a steel-cage match at Madison Square Garden. Afterward, Nash, Scott Hall, Michaels, and Triple H embraced in the ring despite their on-screen characters being rivals. WWE’s retrospective on the Curtain Call says Hall and Nash left WWE for WCW the next day.

The moment mattered because the embrace broke the boundary between the wrestlers’ characters and their real-life friendship. Triple H says the incident brought consequences for him, but it did not mean he had already decided to leave WWE.
Did Vince McMahon offer Triple H a way out after the Curtain Call?
According to Triple H’s later recollection, yes. He said McMahon told him he could leave if he wanted and would make a loophole in his contract so Triple H could get out. The report reproducing this account quotes McMahon as saying: “If you want to leave, I understand. This is not all on you. If you want to leave, if you think you can get a job with Turner, with those guys, if you want to leave, I understand that, I’ll make it where there’s a loophole in your contract, and you can get out.”

What happened to Triple H’s WWE career after he stayed?
WWE’s 2011 retrospective says Triple H bore the brunt of the punishment and his career stalled for several months. It also reports that he captured the Intercontinental Championship later in 1996 and won the 1997 King of the Ring.

Kevin Nash: compensation and family schedule
A 2025 Wrestling Inc. transcription of Triple H’s Flagrant interview reports that Triple H recalled Nash being offered “ridiculous money” and hesitating before his wife stressed the cost of WWE’s schedule on their family. Triple H described WCW’s schedule as probably half as demanding. This is Triple H recalling Nash’s circumstances, not an account of Triple H’s own compensation or family considerations.
Scott Hall: guarantees and revenue
In a 2015 interview with Wrestling Inc., Hall said his WWF contract guaranteed ten matches at no less than $150 per match, while other compensation was not guaranteed. He described seeking better guarantees and a larger share of merchandise and appearance income. Hall characterized his WCW deal this way: “My deal with WCW was if I’d choose to show up, I was guaranteed a certain amount, but I’m not required to come to work for WCW.” Those figures and terms describe Hall’s account of his own contracts; they do not establish Triple H’s terms.
