Tribhuvan Mishra: CA Topper turns a chartered accountant’s career crisis into a double life in sex work, then surrounds that premise with comedy, crime and family drama. Its boldness is unmistakable; its ideas about agency and desire are less fully developed.
What is Tribhuvan Mishra: CA Topper about?
The Hindi Netflix series follows Tribhuvan Mishra, a chartered accountant whose financial circumstances push him into sex work. Netflix’s synopsis frames the trigger as a banking crisis and the result as a secret double life. The series premiered on July 18, 2024, and has nine episodes. Netflix classifies it as a drama and lists it TV-MA on its US title page; ratings and catalog details can vary by region. Netflix’s listing gives the official premise and catalog information.
Puneet Krishna created the series and served as showrunner and co-director, alongside director Amrit Raj Gupta. The launch announcement named Manav Kaul, Tillotama Shome, Subhrajyoti Barat and Shweta Basu Prasad among the cast. Krishna described the writing challenge as “striking the perfect balance between humor and the serious choices he has to make.” That was his stated creative aim, not a guarantee that the tonal balance works on screen. Netflix’s June 28, 2024 announcement contains the launch credits and quote.
Does the series balance comedy, crime and drama?
The premise invites an unusual mix: a respectable profession and financial precarity on one side, a concealed sexual identity and criminal entanglements on the other. The show is at its most distinctive when those elements collide. But the story’s appetite for turns and subplots can pull focus from the central contradiction. Instead of allowing the pressures of Tribhuvan’s double life to steadily deepen, the series often shifts toward the momentum of a crowded crime story.

The broad tone keeps the material from becoming solemn, yet comedy and crime can crowd out the emotional consequences that would give the premise weight. A character entering sex work under financial pressure is not merely a high-concept setup; it raises questions about choice, stigma and survival. The series gestures toward those stakes, but does not always stay with them long enough.
How well does it explore sex work and agency?
The most consequential question is not simply whether Tribhuvan’s secret can remain hidden, but what his work means to him and to the people around him. The premise could open space to examine desire, consent, economic necessity and the way social respectability shapes judgments about sex work. Yet the transition into that life feels too quick to establish a convincing inner struggle. The resulting moral conflict can seem thinner than the situation demands.
That is the central weakness identified by OTTplay critic Ishita Sengupta, who argued that the show moves quickly past the possibilities of female desire and agency in favor of a busy crime-thriller plot. Sengupta rated it 1.5/5 in a review last updated July 24, 2024. This is one critic’s assessment, not evidence of a broader consensus. Read Sengupta’s OTTplay review.
Does the ensemble and its subplots hold together?
The cast gives the series room to build a world around Tribhuvan rather than treating his secret as a one-person puzzle. But a large ensemble only helps if its storylines illuminate the core drama. Here, the competing strands can make the series feel diffuse: the more it expands into crime and side plots, the less sustained attention it gives to the people and choices at the heart of its sex-work premise.

Hindi-film references and tonal shifts contribute to the show’s deliberately heightened feel. They can make the material lively, but they do not automatically create coherence. When the references and comic beats reinforce the same emotional register, they help define the series’ identity; when they compete with serious consequences, they underline the gap between the scale of the premise and the depth of its exploration.
Is it worth watching?
Watch it if you want a Hindi series that takes a striking premise into broad, crime-tinged territory and are willing to accept uneven focus. Skip it if you want a sustained, nuanced examination of sex work, female agency or the moral choices implied by the setup. The series is more memorable for its willingness to be conspicuous than for how far it follows through on the questions it raises.
The Scroll.in review’s title calls it a “show about sex work” that is “proud to be loud,” a useful description of its posture rather than a basis for attributing a detailed argument to that review. Its page was not accessible for fuller verification. Scroll.in’s review page.
