The film’s central break is not that D-16 was secretly a villain all along: it is that he and Orion respond differently to the same injustice, until D-16’s pursuit of justice becomes a demand for power that Orion cannot accept.
Why does D-16 become Megatron in Transformers One?
Transformers One is a 2024 fully CG-animated origin story about the characters who become Optimus Prime and Megatron. Paramount’s synopsis emphasizes that Orion Pax and D-16 were once friends “bonded like brothers” before becoming sworn enemies. That friendship is the foundation of D-16’s transformation: his later conflict with Orion grows out of a relationship and a shared history, not an initial opposition between hero and villain. Paramount’s film overview presents the story in those terms.
The rupture follows the revelation of Sentinel Prime’s betrayal. The film presents the two friends as reacting to that discovery in sharply different ways. D-16’s response grows more forceful and uncompromising; Orion tries to resist the path D-16 is taking. That contrast is an interpretation of the film’s character arc, rather than a claim that D-16’s choices are justified. The conflict is painful precisely because the friends’ original bond makes their disagreement personal.
How does D-16’s idea of justice change?
D-16 is presented as careful and rule-following, which makes his later radicalization feel like a break rather than a revelation of a hidden nature. The Animation Guild’s Keyframe feature discusses that characterization and the visual progression toward Megatron. The feature also notes that D-16’s eyes shift “from a cheerful yellow to a burning red throughout the runtime.” The change gives viewers a concrete visual marker for the transformation, while the character’s increasingly uncompromising choices carry its moral weight.

Production designer Jason Scheier described the emotional tension in an Art Directors Guild consideration document: “Of course, then it’s heart-breaking to watch him become the villain. But he believes what he’s doing is right, and it’s for the good of all bot-kind.” His comment helps explain why the arc can feel tragic: D-16 understands himself as acting for his people, even as his methods put him at odds with Orion. Believing he is right does not make his actions right; it makes the loss of their friendship more consequential. The Art Directors Guild document identifies Scheier as the film’s production designer.
How does Orion Pax’s response drive the split?
Orion’s role in the break is not simply to oppose D-16. As the film frames their friendship, both characters are confronting the consequences of Sentinel Prime’s betrayal, but they diverge over what should happen next. D-16’s pursuit of justice hardens into a willingness to seize power and impose his answer. Orion tries to stop him from crossing that line. Their disagreement turns a shared grievance into a personal rupture: each friend becomes the other’s obstacle.

The film’s cast reflects the origins of the familiar conflict: Chris Hemsworth voices Orion Pax, Brian Tyree Henry voices D-16, Scarlett Johansson voices Elita-1, Keegan-Michael Key voices B-127, Laurence Fishburne voices Alpha Trion, and Jon Hamm voices Sentinel Prime. Paramount’s official materials frame this as the 2024 film’s account of how Optimus Prime and Megatron’s enmity began, not as a guarantee that every detail applies across every version of the Transformers story. Paramount+ lists the film as 1 hour 44 minutes and rated PG.
What does the film’s origin story establish?
By showing D-16 as Orion’s friend before he becomes Megatron, Transformers One gives the villainous turn an emotional cost: the rise of Megatron also ends a friendship. The movie’s framing and production-design commentary support reading D-16 as someone who believes his actions serve the greater good, while the story’s contrast between his choices and Orion’s makes clear that conviction alone cannot repair the damage between them. This is the film’s interpretation of their past, rather than a claim that it settles every version of their shared history.
