The account offers no specific housing incident or outcome. Shyam’s work in the Malayalam film Aabhaasam connects that personal detail to a broader concern she has voiced about how transgender people are represented on screen.
Who is Sheethal Shyam?
Shyam is a transgender actor and activist from Kerala. In a 2017 interview with Deccan Chronicle, she described wanting roles that would show her artistic ability rather than reduce transgender characters to familiar stereotypes. She had previously acted in Ka Bodyscapes.
What was her role in Aabhaasam?
Shyam played Meera, a toy vendor in Bengaluru. Deccan Chronicle described Aabhaasam as a bus journey from Bengaluru to Kochi, set in motion by an incident along the way. Shyam said the film dealt substantially with society’s mistreatment of women and transgender people, and that Meera had faced such circumstances.
For Shyam, the role was an opportunity to demonstrate her acting ability in a mainstream Malayalam film. She told Deccan Chronicle, “I hope this could be a path breaking movie to erase every stereotype associated with our community.” That was her hope for the film, not evidence of its eventual effect.

How did Aabhaasam approach gender norms?
A 2019 Indian Express feature framed director Jubith Namradath’s Malayalam debut around democracy and gender norms. It reported that the production and release encountered obstacles, including a halted shoot, police questioning, censor cuts and restricted screening conditions. Those details are reported by the feature; they do not by themselves establish the film’s audience reception or broader impact.
What bias in screen portrayals did Shyam identify?
Shyam objected to the narrow range of roles often given to transgender people. As quoted by Deccan Chronicle: “People from our community are painted in negative shades or they are the emotional type. On screen, we are either one or the other.” Her criticism is specific: portrayals can confine transgender characters to negative or emotionally defined types instead of allowing them a fuller range.
Her public advocacy also extended beyond film. A Oneindia Malayalam report dated March 9, 2018 quoted her calling for equality and special consideration for transgender people in health, employment, education and other areas. The report also noted recognition for her acting in the short film Avalotoppam at the Nizhalattam street film festival.

The 2018 Scroll feature’s search excerpt said Shyam was living with her partner of 12 years, Smintoj, and that they wanted to buy a house; it also said discrimination had not let up. The excerpt does not identify a landlord, describe a refused application or explain what happened to their search. It is a historical, narrowly reported personal detail, not a basis for claims about their current housing situation.

No verified statistic on transgender housing discrimination was included in the cited material, so the couple’s reported plans should not be treated as a measure of prevalence. What the available account supports is more limited: Shyam’s hopes for a home were reported alongside her continuing experience of bias, while the specifics remain unstated.
