Traditional jump rope rhymes are chanted or sung in time with a turning rope, and no one version is the correct one. Children pass them along by ear, change lines, and attach the same words to different games, so any written version records one place and one moment rather than a fixed text. The rhymes below come from archival recordings and published folklore collections, and each is identified by its setting and date.

Documented rhymes and where they were recorded

The table lists the rhymes that appear in documented collections, with the source for each. Where a source does not state a detail, the cell says so rather than guessing.

Rhyme Where it is documented What the source establishes

Treat each row as one recorded version. A child in another town may use the same title with different lines, or the same lines for a different game.

How the rhythm shapes the game

The rhyme sets the pace. The Library of Congress describes the counting in “Cinderella Dressed in Yella” as continuing while the rope spinners speed up, so the jumper’s endurance is tested against a rising tempo. Rhythm is the structure of the game: the words tell the jumper when to expect the next count, and the spinners use the same beat to change speed.

Counting rhymes

In counting rhymes, the number is the point of play. The “Cinderella” pattern is a clear example. Cinderella does something, makes a mistake, and the children count the resulting number of doctors as the rope turns faster. The jumper keeps going until a miss, and the count is the score. The Smithsonian collection describes counting games as one of its three main categories.

Rhymes with miming and clapping

Some rhymes are built around action rather than number. The Smithsonian Folkways collection groups its games into counting, rhyming, and miming songs. The Library of Congress account also records that some items were used for both clapping games and jump rope, so the same words can move between the two without changing much.

Chants keyed to the rope

Some chants are simply tuned to the beat of the rope. The Benjamin Franklin chant, described by Smithsonian Folkways Magazine in 2009, is an example: its rhythm is meant to match the slap of the rope on the ground.

The 1978 Ararat recording

The Library of Congress’s best-documented classroom example comes from folklorist Patrick Mullen, who recorded Mrs. Currier’s fourth-grade class at Blue Ridge Elementary School in Ararat, Virginia, on September 12, 1978. The children demonstrated rhymes, games, and songs, including “Cinderella Dressed in Yella,” “Down By The River,” and “Cranky old Jalopy.” Because this is a single class on a single day, it shows one community’s repertoire at that time, not the rhymes of children generally.

Cinderella Dressed in Yella: what is and is not known

The Library of Congress reports that Iona and Peter Opie collected “Cinderella Dressed in Yella” in the United Kingdom in 1972. The Opies considered whether the rhyme might have been prompted by “Cinderella Rockefeller,” a pop song first performed in 1967, because both use a rhyme about Cinderella. The Library of Congress says the jump-rope version is not very similar to the song and that no earlier versions of the rhyme are known.

The evidence therefore supports a possible connection, not a proven origin. The song may have influenced the rhyme, or the two may share only a theme. The earliest documented form that can be dated is the 1972 UK collection and the 1978 Ararat recording.

How versions change

The Library of Congress describes child-to-child transmission as the usual route, while noting that relatives sometimes teach rhymes as well. Children add twists, update references, and keep older material alongside new lines. A rhyme can therefore carry different verses in different playgrounds, and the same verse can turn up in a different game.

When collecting a version from children, folklorists have asked the questions Mullen used in Ararat. The following order works well for a classroom or family interview:

  1. Ask the child to perform the rhyme exactly as they say it, without correcting it.
  2. Ask what happens next in the game, and whether the rhyme changes at that point.
  3. Ask what happens when a jumper misses, since the miss often sets the end of the rhyme.
  4. Ask where the child learned it: from another child, a sibling, a parent, or a grandparent.
  5. Write down the wording, the name of the town or school, and the date.

Who jumped, and how that has shifted

In the Ararat class, jump-rope rhymes and clapping games were almost entirely girls’ folklore. The Library of Congress account also observes that jumping rope for health later became more common among boys and adults, and that traditional rhymes became less exclusively associated with girls. This describes a historical trend in one period and place, not a rule about who jumps rope today.

Regional collections beyond Virginia

The Library of Congress research guide describes a 1976 collection of chants and jump-rope rhymes recorded at Brightwood School in Washington, D.C., including Black children’s chants, ring games, clapping and rhyming songs. The guide establishes the collection’s existence and general contents, not the wording of individual rhymes. The Smithsonian Folkways Skip Rope collection, with its 33 American games, gives a second regional view through the Edgewood, Illinois examples. Its publication date is not stated on the collection page.

Trying the rhymes with children

  • Use a plain rope long enough for the jumper’s height, with one or two turners. No special equipment is required.
  • Begin with a counting rhyme. The tempo builds gradually, which suits a first attempt.
  • Let the children choose which version to use, and accept their wording over a printed one.
  • Keep a record of each version alongside the place and date, so the variation stays visible.
  • For the Smithsonian lyrics and diagrams, check the current listing on the Smithsonian Folkways site, since formats and availability can change.
