Spoilers for the 2020 anime’s first season. Rachel pushes Bam off the platform at the climax of the final test because she wants the chance to climb the Tower for herself. The finale reveals that she was not chosen, resented Bam’s success, and made a bargain with Headon to get her opportunity. It is a deliberate betrayal, not an accident.
What happens at the end of Season 1?
During the Underwater Hunt, Bam defeats the Bull and appears close to completing the test. Just before it ends, Rachel pushes him away from the platform and out of the Shinsu Bubble. The moment reframes the danger the pair faced together: Rachel was not trying to help Bam pass but chose to remove him from the way of her own ascent.
Episode 13 then revisits events from Rachel’s perspective. The shift explains the motive behind the push, but it does not undo the betrayal. Crunchyroll’s June 24, 2020 finale recap and its July 12, 2024 season recap describe the reveal and the bargain behind it.
Why does Rachel push Bam?
Rachel wants to climb the Tower, but she was not chosen to do so. She had been unable to face Headon’s initial test, while Bam entered the Tower and succeeded. Headon hid Rachel, leaving her to watch Bam advance. The finale recap says she resented him for receiving the chance she wanted despite her own failure to take the test.

According to Crunchyroll’s season recap, Rachel promised Headon she would do anything for a chance to climb, and the condition was that she end Bam’s life. Her push is therefore a calculated choice driven by envy, ambition, and the desire to reach the Tower’s heights. The season’s account makes that decision intelligible, but it does not excuse it or establish every aspect of Rachel’s history and psychology.
Why is Bam’s place in the Tower unusual?
Bam is an Irregular: he entered the Tower from outside rather than being selected from within it. The season presents this status as important to his route through the tests. Khun learns that only an Irregular can request the Administrator’s test, which becomes the path the group attempts to pursue. Bam’s unusual relationship with Shinsu and his ability to pass tests also attract attention.

That context helps explain why Rachel’s betrayal lands so sharply. Bam has been loyal to her, while Khun, Rak, and the others agree to help him and Rachel during the final test. The finale recap singles out Khun as unwilling to simply accept Rachel after the push; the act breaks the trust built over the season.
Does Bam die at the end of Season 1?
The season ends with Bam falling from the platform, but the first-season finale leaves his fate as a cliffhanger. Crunchyroll’s episode 13 listing identifies the finale, released June 24, 2020; it does not settle what happens to Bam after the fall. The ending alone does not establish that he is dead.

What the finale explains—and what it leaves open
The reveal supplies Rachel’s immediate reason for betraying Bam: she wants the chance to climb and resents that the Tower chose him instead of her. It does not resolve every question about her past, nor does the season-one ending itself answer Bam’s fate after the fall. The Crunchyroll recaps focus on the anime’s events; they do not provide a detailed webtoon-versus-anime comparison.
