Sthal (A Match), Jayant Digambar Somalkar’s Marathi-language feature, follows a young woman whose ambition to continue her education is repeatedly interrupted by visits from potential grooms. Through Savita’s experience, the film turns the familiar “kanda-poha programme” into a portrait of the scrutiny and humiliation embedded in bride selection.
What is Sthal about?
Set in Dongargaon, a village in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, Sthal follows Savita, a BA student from a farming family. She wants to pursue further education, while her parents worry about finding her a suitable match. Prospective grooms and their families come to visit, and Savita is judged and rejected for different reasons.
The meetings revolve around a familiar ritual: serving poha and answering questions, referred to in the film as the “kanda-poha programme.” Its everyday quality can be almost comic, but that does not soften the indignity of being examined and dismissed. As the visits recur, the distance between Savita’s own plans and the marriage process’s demands becomes harder to ignore.
The film also connects the family’s urgency to cotton-farmer distress and economic uncertainty, and places Savita’s brother’s unemployment among the constraints faced by village youth. These are aspects of the story, not a statistical account of Vidarbha’s economy.

How does the film frame bride selection?
Somalkar has said that he began to see the practice differently after accompanying a cousin to a prospective bride meeting. “I have been seeing this kanda poha programme since my childhood,” he told Scroll, describing a ritual he had known since childhood. As an adult, he recognized the power imbalance behind it: “This patriarchy in society, where you look at a woman as a commodity to be purchased, where she is rejected because of this or that aspect – I realised this only as an adult.”
That perspective gives the repeated visits their force. The film centers the experience of one young woman in one family and village; it does not establish that every arranged marriage or rural household works the same way.

Why Dongargaon matters to the film
Somalkar grew up in Dongargaon, and the film was shot in his village. Scroll reports that local non-professional performers were cast to convey the setting and Vidarbha accent. “We cast locals since it was necessary to get the Vidarbha accent right,” he said. He has described the film as an attempt to show local life closely rather than glorify it, adding, “Cinema is life, after all.”
