Tory Lanez was attacked at California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi on May 12, 2025, and prison staff gave him medical aid, called 911 and transported him to an outside medical facility, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), as reported by The Associated Press and CBS Los Angeles. The official account did not specify the weapon or injury count. A post attributed to Lanez’s Instagram account later described 14 stab wounds; a 2026 lawsuit reported a different count and alleged failures in his protection. Those claims are distinct from CDCR’s account and have not been established as court findings.
What happened at the prison
CDCR’s account, reported by The Associated Press and CBS Los Angeles, places the attack in a housing unit at California Correctional Institution (CCI) in Tehachapi at about 7:20 a.m. on May 12, 2025. Staff gave Lanez medical aid, called 911 and took him to an outside medical facility. The contemporaneous official account did not describe how the attack was carried out or specify his injuries.

CDCR said CCI’s Investigative Services Unit and the Kern County District Attorney’s Office had begun an investigation. The announcement established that an investigation was initiated; it did not identify a motive or establish who was responsible.
What was reported about Lanez’s injuries
The injury details came from sources separate from the prison agency’s initial account. AP reported on May 12, 2025, that a message posted to Lanez’s Instagram account said he had been stabbed 14 times and that both lungs had collapsed. Those details were attributed to the post, not to CDCR or an independently cited medical record.
#1 Best Overall
Coverage of Lanez’s later lawsuit described roughly 16 stab wounds, along with collapsed lungs, scarring and an airlift. These are descriptions of claims in the lawsuit, not findings by a court. The 14-wound figure attributed to the 2025 Instagram post and the roughly 16 wounds described in 2026 lawsuit coverage differ; the available reporting does not resolve that discrepancy.
What the later lawsuit alleges
AP and Pitchfork reported in April 2026 that Lanez filed a federal lawsuit seeking $100 million. The complaint reportedly alleges that prison officials failed to protect him, including through decisions about inmate housing and staff conduct. These are allegations in civil litigation; the reporting does not establish them as fact or report a court ruling on their merits.

- Shrink-wrapped
AP reported that Lanez was transferred to California Men’s Colony after the attack. CDCR’s spokesperson said the agency did not comment on pending litigation. The available coverage does not establish the lawsuit’s status after its reported filing in April 2026.
