Top Gun: Maverick, War of the Worlds and Mission: Impossible II are regularly named among Tom Cruise’s biggest movie paydays, with reported totals around or above $100 million. But no public, audited ranking establishes which role paid him the most: the figures are estimates that combine upfront salary and backend participation in different ways.
Which Tom Cruise movie role paid him the most?
The strongest answer is a top tier, not a single certain winner. Mission: Impossible II has a detailed historical estimate of $92 million for Cruise’s share, while later roundups commonly put it at about $100 million. War of the Worlds is also often estimated at about $100 million, and Top Gun: Maverick has been reported at more than $100 million. Those totals are not directly comparable, and the exact payouts are not public.
The figures below are nominal reported amounts, not inflation-adjusted values or verified contract totals. “Total” estimates may include backend participation; they should not be read as salary alone.
Tom Cruise’s biggest reported movie paydays
| Film (release year) | Reported total compensation | Reported upfront salary | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mission: Impossible II (2000) | $92 million in Edward Jay Epstein’s historical account; later estimates commonly round it to about $100 million | Not stated in the cited accounts | The $92 million is described as Cruise’s share, not a salary figure. The later $100 million amount is an estimate, not an exact confirmed total. |
| War of the Worlds (2005) | About $100 million, estimated by Celebrity Net Worth in 2026 | A comparable salary-only figure is not established in the cited sources | Reported as a gross-participation payday; the exact contract terms and final payment are not public. |
| Top Gun: Maverick (2022) | More than $100 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth in 2026; TheStreet’s 2025 table estimates $149 million in profit-sharing. Bustle’s 2022 compilation gave a possible range of $100 million to $200 million. | About $13 million, reported by TheStreet in 2025 and Bustle in 2022 | These are differing secondary estimates, not a confirmed final payout. The figures should not be added together or calculated from box-office gross. |
| Mission: Impossible III (2006) | $75 million total with backend, estimated by Celebrity Net Worth in 2026 | Not stated in the cited accounts | A retrospective estimate rather than a verified accounting. |
| Mission: Impossible (1996) | $70 million total with backend, estimated by Celebrity Net Worth in 2026 | Not stated in the cited accounts | A retrospective estimate rather than a verified accounting. |
The evidence supports describing the first three titles as a top tier, but not assigning them a definitive first, second and third place. The amounts come from sources using different methods and levels of precision.

Why a movie payday can be much larger than a salary
A reported salary is the upfront amount for acting. A total payday may also include backend participation: a contractually defined share of revenue or profits, sometimes tied to theatrical performance or later revenue such as home video. The sources do not establish all the relevant contract definitions, thresholds, deductions or accounting terms for these films.
That distinction is especially important for Top Gun: Maverick. TheStreet lists an approximately $13 million salary alongside an estimated $149 million in profit-sharing, while other reports give a total above $100 million or a broader possible range. Those estimates do not disclose enough to reconcile them into one certain payment. Nor can a performer’s share be calculated simply by multiplying a reported percentage by a film’s box-office gross.

What is known about the Mission: Impossible II figure?
Edward Jay Epstein’s analysis, hosted by NYU Stern and published around 2006, reports that Cruise’s share from Mission: Impossible II amounted to $92 million. The same account discusses the film’s box office and DVD sales as part of its explanation of participation economics. It is a detailed journalist’s account, not the underlying contract or an audited payout statement.
Later compilations often round the film’s reported payday to about $100 million. That rounded estimate and Epstein’s $92 million account are related reporting, not proof of an exact final total.

How to read these rankings
- Separate salary from total compensation. The approximately $13 million reported for Top Gun: Maverick is an upfront salary estimate; the much larger amounts are profit-sharing or total-payday estimates.
- Keep the source and date attached to each number. A 2026 retrospective estimate, a 2025 table and a historical analysis do not have identical methods or evidentiary weight.
- Treat backend totals as estimates unless a source documents a final payment. No contract-complete, public all-career accounting establishes these figures as verified earnings.
- Do not treat the nominal figures as equivalent purchasing power. The amounts span releases from 1996 to 2022 and have not been adjusted for inflation here.
